    Our now retired Therapy dog Valli who since she was 9 months has worked as a Reading dog at school has struggled for two years mentally since we lost our JJ who was her soul mate.
    Despite our best efforts to stop her self mutilation with her consistently wearing inflatable collars or vests she reopens scar tissue from minor surgery she had on her flank when she was around two and keeping an open wound clean and clear from any infection is taking its toll on her,  we have a decision to make after Christmas ironically be the 3rd anniversary of JJ’s passing.
    Its now a quality of life decision because other than exercising she lives in these collars to protect her from herself. 
    Quality of life decisions are the toughest to make because I’ll always doubt myself on it being the right one.

    Absolutely horrible position to be in. I don't know you personally @T_C_E but it's evident in your every post on this thread that you love your dogs like they're your children. I am 100% confident that, whatever decision you make, it will be the right one for Valli - even though it may not feel it.

    Our beautiful girl Valli passed away peacefully at 4.30 this afternoon. 
    Sadly we had to retire her from the Therapy work she loved so much, this caused her much distress as it’s something she did all her life and she took took to self mutilation something while we closely monitored she would harm herself at every opportunity.
    The past month/6 weeks she lost a lot of conditioning and I had inkling something was wrong although hoped it was her getting a winter coat. 
    The winter coat never came and weight loss became obvious and she had lost 4kg, two weeks later that became just under 10kg. 
    We’ll miss the attitude, the love and beauty she brought to not only us but 100s of children and adults of all abilities. 
    Run to the bridge sweetheart.
    Bailey, Xena and JJ will keep you safe. Xx

    Any pet leaving is always distressing, but especially so when an animal has given so much joy to not only your family but to many children who found comfort from this remarkable dog.

    My thoughts are with you and your family at this incredibly sad time.
