It’s very plastic/manufactured and, as you say, ignores their own history.NorthStandUltra said:That North London Forever thing irritates the shit out of me:
Arsenal have latched on to it conveniently forgetting their Woolwich up bringing.
The Pie, Mash & Liquor reference claiming it’s part of their heritage
Bloody Arsenal creating their own history, just like the stripey lot from Surrey1 -
Chelsea Dagger - Fratellis2

Mojo did a fantastic cd of London songs. I’ll try and find it and post the songs on here.
My standout memories are a calypso I think called,London is the town for me and a Noel Coward song whose name I can’t remember.0 -

(The story answer is no. However a couple of remnants remain. Details here, towards the end;Stig said:
Did it somehow get incorporated into Liverpool Street when that was renovated (not the building, but the lines I'm thinking).swords_alive said:
Broad street station apparently, now demolished, and some great slam doors at the end.Stig said:

Ray Davies songs, both solo and with The Kinks are littered with references to London and many examples have already been posted above.
The obvious choice being Waterloo Sunset as per the OP, and coincidentally my favourite record of all time.
Another real favourite of mine is this song, Nobody's Fool, which was never actually recorded/released by the Kinks. This is Ray's demo, which he wrote and recorded as the theme tune to popular 70s TV show "Budgie" starring Adam Faith as a small time Soho hustler.
I love the empathy and pathos that Ray conjures. I can't imagine anybody else writing this song.
But then he is my musical hero.

Pop goes the Weasel by Anthony Newley.
it makes reference to the Eagle pub in City Road.
Christ, that has depressed me that I have remembered that.
I must be getting really old!1 -
I love that album so much and always got a huge kick out of Plumstead Common being namechecked on “Girl VII”.London Belongs To Me - St Etienne1 -
Part Time Punks - TV Personalities
Loads of Kinks, Squeeze and Madness
The Noel Coward one mentioned above is probably London Pride.
A mate of mine Mark Sampson has a couple of good ones New Cross Symphony (chorus this is New Cross, this is London Se14) and In Debt in Deptford.0 -
Squeeze. Down in the Valley.1

That certain night, the night we met,
There was magic abroad in the air,
There were angels dining at the Ritz
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square.2 -
That’s from the Foxbase Alpha album.FreshHaddock said:

’Tales from Turnpike House’ however is an album about the residents of a real tower block in EC1. The characters are (I suppose) fictional but the stories are realistic. The songs may not all actually quote anything in London but they all depict London life.1 -

Let me take you by the hand
And drag you through the streets of London.
I'll show you something that'll really make you sick.
I used to love the Anti-Nowhere League.
