Katie’s out beaten 7-5, 6-4  in a hard fought match in which the top seed had to dig deep

But Sonay Kartal won her match 6-3, 6-1 and now faces Svitolina in Friday nights quarter final.
  • Norrie loses in the last 16 in Brisbane to Kovacevic.

Francesca Jones unfortunately had to retire in her match today against Chinese player and 7th seed in the tournament Wang Xinyu.  Wang was leading 6-4, 4-3 before Jones retired with a leg injury for which she had received medical attention towards the end of the first set.  Francesca hopes to be ok for the Australian Open.

So close.  Sonay Kartal came back from a set down to square the game 7-6 in the second set.  Despite leading 5-2 in the deciding set she was broken back and Svetolina took out the tie break to win the match.  That’s it for the British girls I’m afreaid.

Interesting to see how many Brits get through qualifying for the Australian Open. Currently have Fearnley and Norrie in the men's main draw and Kartal, Raducanu and Jones in the women's.

Svetolina was duly crowned women’s singles champion with a straight sets win over Wang Xinyu.

Now it’s the boys’ turn and the only British player starting in the round of 32 is Cameron Norrie who plays Hugo Gaston from France this evening.

Gaston achieved a career high of 58 in 2022.
  • Norrie beats Gaston at the ASB classic. Fearnley has got into the draw as a lucky loser.

Boulter is now in the main draw of the Australian Open after a couple of players have withdrawn.

Yes, Cam was pleased with his performance in front of a full crowd.  One of the standout numbers was his 88% win of all points when his first serve landed.

His round of 16 match will be on Wednesday local time against an opponent yet to be decided.

Could be interesting.  Cameron Norrie faces French Davis Cup player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in R16 tomorrow afternoon.

He was world number 29 last year and has one of the most powerful serves in tennis.  At Wimbledon last year he broke the tournament record with a serve of 153mph and he has the fastest second serve of all time at 147mph.  At 6’ 7” and age 22 he has won prize money of nearly $US3m and he has won 2 ATP tour singles titles.
  • Fearnley loses to Halys in the first round of the ASB classic. Raducanu's opening match at Hobart is suspended due to rain.

It’s curtains for Cam.  He was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 6-7.

Perricard thundered down 25 aces one of which saved him from defeat when, down 4-5 in the third set, he saved a match point.  Norrie was credited with 3 aces.

Raducanu won her rain delayed first round match in Hobart.
Raducanu's second round opponent has withdrawn due to injury - wonder if she gets as much stick?

What's going on with Jack Draper - a prolonged and twice extended lay off due to an 'arm injury'?

Raducanu has a pretty extensive injury history - deserves credit for keeping going.

It is worrying that Draper hasn't returned. Another career  hampered by injury?
  • Fery has qualified for the Australian Open - won all his qualifying matches in straight sets.

Radacanu has lost to Taylah Preston 6-2, 6-4, a 20 year-old Australian from Perth, who was ranked 204th in the world prior to the match (in the live rankings has now risen to 161 as a result of this win).

Too many unforced errors from Raducanu who is possibly "ring-rusty" from her lay-off. Disappointing nonetheless.

Raducanu was seeded No 1 for the tournament - offered her a good chance to win her first tour title since her US Open win.

Not a great preparation for the Aus Open.

Norrie won. Raducanu played poorly apparently - what's with the lack of consistency? Looked ok, if not great, in sets 2 & 3 of her first round match

Papers the other day were reporting that she was moaning about the scheduling of her matches.

She won't have to worry anymore.

The papers report a lot of things that people haven't actually said - or completely out of context! She is one they do this a lot too, as it generates a lot of comments, especially from the ignorant trolls

Norrie the big outsider to beat 3rd seed Zverev tomorrow morning. Will have to hope Zverev has one of his early round wobbles that seem to happen once or twice a year and be ready to take advantage of it.

Norrie beaten in four sets by Zverev. Ends British interest in the singles of this year’s Aus Open.

Number 1 seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool lost in the 2nd round (last 32).

Disappointing but warning signs were there. They reached the final of the Brisbane International but narrowly lost. However they lost in the first round of the next tournament the Adelaide International.

I see Radacanu has split with her coach, Francisco Roig after six months. She, more or less, threw him under the bus last week in the post-match press conference when she lost to an outsider in the Australian Open in saying “I want to be playing a different way.”

Radacanu has now had at least ten coaches in the last four and a half years. Roig was 18 years with Nadal. At some point she and her father are going to have to trust someone and stop questioning what they are telling her otherwise she is never going to go on court in every match with a clear and focused mind.
