We could have signed a LWB on the 2nd January but they wouldn’t have been a good one. There are 21 games left of the season, Jones would rather play 19 games with the best LWB we can find, than play 21 with the first one available to usgolfaddick said:
Tbf we've all known that we needed a LWB since....er....2 months ago. Should have been on the blower then & had someone lined up to come in on Jan 2nd. But a week has passed & we are no closer to signing anyone......apart from an already injured one.YannTheMann said:

Yes, we've known we need a LWB for months, do you really, I mean really, think they only started looking, short listing and phoning on January 2nd?
Or is it more likely they have been doing all that and more but as you yourself go on to explain there are other factors, other parties, other reasons, that might be in play.
If I said I rang my financial advisor this morning and they said they couldn't instantly shift a pension, arrange a mortgage or a loan and I then whinged and whinged and whinged about how lazy they were or unprepared all financial advisors were you might have a more informed perspective.
We'll sign someone when it's possible, not when we or the club ideally want to.

Heard a few whispers that a CEO could be getting appointed this month.
Haven’t got any names at the moment though.7 -
I absolutely do not subscribe to the golfie view on this.
But.... LWB is such an important position to the way we play and is affecting us every game at the moment that if I was Jones I would have been tempted on 2nd Jan to just bring in whatever average LB/LWB is available and cheap on a contract till the end of the season or on loan, even a Purrington type solid but lacking a bit would do. Thay then allows us to spend the rest of the month getting in the LWB we actually want and takes the pressure off in the meantime.
That at least gives us injury cover for the rest of the season in a problem position. And means we dont have to rush Josh back - who could also do a job at LCB.
Reality is not that simple.1 -
But we’ve basically already done that (unsuccessfully) with Roussillon. Who is to say signing an average LB/LWB would have been easy anyway? Average for us would mean top end L1 teams chasing them too and the player might prefer more game time. Deals are hard enough as it is without wasting time early in the window on players you don’t really have plans forcantersaddick said:I absolutely do not subscribe to the golfie view on this.

Fair points hence my "reality is not that simple". A serious football club would never likely do that. And I'm glad we didn't. But I would be tempted if I was in that position.fenaddick said:

Don’t see us signing many this window if any, think if we do the focus on 1/2 it has to be a LWB or a horrible big striker to do the Leaburn role properly.

Ipswich in for Dykes …. Few clubs now interested3
-
I am not disgruntled, but it is often mentioned that our owners are worth billions.I certainly don’t particularly want to see money being splashed around Willy Nilly because I believe that would burden the club with debt rather than it being no biggie because it amounts to generous free crumbs from a rich man’s table.
My concern is for when the novelty of owning Charlton Athletic wears off for these so called billionaires, and in getting out it leave the club in financial peril.
If I were a billionaire owning the club my resources would go towards the spending needed to become a category one academy rather than splashing out on an unknown quantity from the continent. If we didn’t have the drip drip effect of some of our most promising younger youngsters being siphoned off to the likes of Chelsea or Arsenal it might even save us money in the longer term by having to spend less on transfer fees.
Oh, and if I was a billionaire owning the club I would buy the Valley and Sparrows Lane.
I suppose what worries me is using this or other transfer windows to splash out money on a (bless him) Gassan Ahadme, rather than being happy Mbick is coming through the ranks.5 -

Hopefully this is where some upwards management should be coming in. The management team should be setting the expectations that £2/2.5m on a player at this level doesn't guarantee you a top Championship performer, at that level some will work out and some won't. As long as the owners are realistic about that then there should be a bit more budget to play wiBraziliance said:
Our owners are very rich btw. One of the two has a net worth of over 3 billion, and the other 400-500 million. These aren't chancers showing front like many of the parasites who have had their claws in us, these are legitimate business men.SouthLincsAddick said:
At last, some realism has entered the chat. All that sniping and whining was getting insufferable. Like it or loath it, this is our only way forward, unless someone finds the odd billion down the back of the sofa. COYA!Berkshire1970 said:
What you’re forgetting is Charlton’s transfer policy is to buy potential from lower divisions for two reasons. The first is budget and the latter we are not attractive to more established championship players. We’ve been languishing league 1 for many years & are rebuilding. Let’s keep focused and be realistic!Sword65pf said:
Did he actually play in the 10 role for Blackpool? And was he that good at it?MarcusH26 said:Don't think Apter is worth even considering off loading. There's plenty there to work with with him and I think he's going to get more of a chance once Edwards is back on the other flank.
Maybe even worth a look in the 10 role with players going off the boil there.
I believe a fan who is quite trust worthy was told by Nathan Jones at Wembley that we "are fucking minted"?
It isn't about their money, it's about what they are willing to put in / can put in.
Based on how much we earned through TV money, the promotion transfer leeway, and deals being added into FFP by year, not as an outright sum towards the total, we do have some money knocking about looking at the figures.
It's just whether or not the powers that be are willing to use it.
To play devil's advocate, they currently might be thinking, after allowing you to spend 2.5 million on Apter, 2 million or thereabouts on Harvey Knibbs, 1.5 million on Tanto Olaofe, and almost a million on Costello, and them barely getting a look in, can our recruitment team be trusted spending anymore substantial fees this season?0 -

Just looked at the BBC website, and noted a rush of signings, so those clubs probably had done the preparation to get these signings done early before the window opened.
We always seem to be not prepared to get our targets early.
I fear if we do sign any one it will be at the end of the window.5 -

What kind of idiot team would sign a Scandinavian striker in January who would then only score one L1 goal for the club before being shipped off back to Europe?killerandflash said:A reminder of the perils of the January window is what happened to Luton last January.
In a bid to stay up they signed highly rated young Norwegian striker Lasse Nordås for a fee of around £2.6m to score the goals to keep them up.
After zero goals (and hardly playing) last season, and just 1 in L1 this season, he's been loaned out to a Dutch team.

And to answer your point - if, back in November, you knew your fixed rate mortgage term was ending on Jan 1st, when would you contact your broker/ adviser to make sure you didnt revert to your lenders Standard Variable Rate on Jan 1st ??
But obviously I'm wrong again & happy to be proved it when a new, fit, experienced LWB starts against Sheff U next Sat.

Brilliant analogy Golfie. I think we will have to wait and see mate, Nathan Jones seems to be confident that by the Sheffield Utd game, we will be in a lot better position, I'm happy to go with that and anyway, I finally paid my Mortgage up in November.golfaddick said:
