Only problem is he isn't a LWB. He's a central midfielderwolfgang said:
Most sensible suggestion in this whole thread. East Londoner and played in the same West Ham youth teams as Conor Coventry, and I reckon of similar quality. Best part is that, although primarily a LWB, he can play in many other positions, so will still be useful if and when Edwards returns. Someone who is within our price range, unlike many fanciful suggestions here.Swisdom said:
Another player I have liked for a while is Joe Powell. Currently captaining Rotherham but he has a crecking left foot, takes a lovely set piece and is very creative. Might offer us more offensively than the midfielders currently do and he is out of contract in the summer I believe so unlikely to be horrendously proced.3 -
All the points you make are important but it is absolutely vital that we do not go back to League 1.jose said:I am not disgruntled, but it is often mentioned that our owners are worth billions.I certainly don’t particularly want to see money being splashed around Willy Nilly because I believe that would burden the club with debt rather than it being no biggie because it amounts to generous free crumbs from a rich man’s table.
My concern is for when the novelty of owning Charlton Athletic wears off for these so called billionaires, and in getting out it leave the club in financial peril.
If I were a billionaire owning the club my resources would go towards the spending needed to become a category one academy rather than splashing out on an unknown quantity from the continent. If we didn’t have the drip drip effect of some of our most promising younger youngsters being siphoned off to the likes of Chelsea or Arsenal it might even save us money in the longer term by having to spend less on transfer fees.
Oh, and if I was a billionaire owning the club I would buy the Valley and Sparrows Lane.
I suppose what worries me is using this or other transfer windows to splash out money on a (bless him) Gassan Ahadme, rather than being happy Mbick is coming through the ranks.2 -
I'd say that you are infering that it means early business but I've not seen anyone at the club say that.killerandflash said:
If someone is sleeping at the training ground at the start of January, and specifically says how hard they are working at transfers, that certainly implies that we want early business. AND that he wants everyone to know how hard they are working to get transfers in.Henry Irving said:
Does it "create expectations"?killerandflash said:Of course transfers take time, but I don't think NJ helps himself with his comments (from the start of the month) about sleeping at the training ground because he's so busy with transfer business etc

It does create expectations that we'll be doing early business. Instead not only have we not signed anyone, we haven't done any business yet in terms of loaning players out, or indeed recalling any of the players we have out.
He's saying he's working hard but says nothing about early business or timescales.
Personally, i'd be more worried that he's not going home to rest at a busy and stressful time.
If we just wanted a couple of bodies in sometime in January, then I assume he'd be back home with the family more, and letting Chapple and Rodwell do the grunt work at this stage.
I think it means he's overworking.
He lives in Greenwich and his family are in Poole so maybe he finds it easier but I'm still not sure it's good practice.3 -
I find the ‘working so hard he’s sleeping at the training ground’ rhetoric absolute nonsense. He’s a place literally within the same borough, a 10 min Uber. What the hell has to be done late at night at the training ground that can’t be done via a phone or laptop?11
-
What I did read that I didn't know was Jones saying players can play for two different clubs in the FA Cup in the same season now.
When did that chsnge?0 -
I would take everything he says with a 'pinch of salt' especially when it comes to his work ethic that he always wants to promote as manic, all in guy.AFKABartram said:I find the ‘working so hard he’s sleeping at the training ground’ rhetoric absolute nonsense. As I said about, we have all worked with people like Nathan and I would not swap him for anyone (available to us).2 -

What is more pertinent to what other clubs may or may not be doing is that we know exactly where our issues lie (if you happened to be asleep for the past 2 months it's in defence, and more precisely at LWB, and up front). Other clubs may not be "in crisis" in certain areas and are happy just to pick up a player or 2 to compliment their squad.msomerton said:All the people who tell us how hard it is to get a transfer done, do not explain how are rivals do it so quickly, and how this seems to be the same every season. We then end up with the players who have not played in weeks or months and are not ready to start for weeks.
Yes that is not every signing, but we do seem to have a a very high proportion of these most seasons.

When did that chsnge?"The rules in their previous form stated that a player could only appear for one team in any single instalment of the competition.
That stood regardless of whether they were on loan when they made the appearance, or transferred permanently in the middle of the season; once they have played for one team in the FA Cup, that’s the only team they can represent in that season’s tournament.
However, those rules have now been relaxed by the FA, with players now able to play for two clubs in the FA Cup during the same season, or one club in the qualification rounds and one in the tournament proper."

Its very noticeable, that none of the deals involving players moving to a Championship club so far has been from another Championship club, they've all been from abroad or a loan from a Premiership club.
What does that tell you, the other club wants to get someone in before finally releasing the outgoing player, or they don't want to help one of their competitors. The only time this may change is when a player is out of contract in the summer and its a case of get a fee now or not at all later.
This is why there is always a big scramble of deals in the last couple of days.2 -
I'm completely stunned at the amount of people who have taken NJ's comments about sleeping at the training ground literally and equally as stunned at some being seemingly angry about it.20

Or maybe they have been playing a 17 year old striker at right back due to having literally no-one else. The problem is that we don't really know about other clubs relative to us, we could see someone sign a right back and wonder why we weren't in for them but their CL equivalent is begging for a striker (just as an example.)golfaddick said:

And we don't know how many of the signings made by other clubs really work our, outside of transformational successes or absolutely spectacular flops most of the time they go unnoticed.
"Comparison is the thief of joy" as the saying goes. I certainly feel like we need to strengthen the squad we have but I won't overly concern myself with what other clubs do unless we start selling to direct rivals.2 -
As someone else who plays up for social media and only act up the way I do to drive social media clicks and interest, it was a performative comment to show how passionate he is.AFKABartram said:I find the ‘working so hard he’s sleeping at the training ground’ rhetoric absolute nonsense. How do you know plans havn't been made in advance, my informant says they have, but in the Championship it's a "cut throat" business and everyones scrambling to get it over with in a month. Its not like the summer when there's months to do it and lots of players are looking for a new club.msomerton said:It should not be necessary for him to do that, if plans made in advance.0 -

The sleeping at the training ground was a figure of speech, like married to your job or working 25 hours a day.You lot are so easy to gaslight, no wonder Trump is eyeing the place up.11

Loads of new posts and not any about any rumoured signings.4

But I’ve learnt a lot about NJ’s sleeping habits.5

All part of NJ's master plan.redbuttle said:Loads of new posts and not any about any rumoured signings.
Lulling the rest of the Championship into a false sense of security.
Won't know what's hit them when we sign 3 LWB's on 31st of January.3 -

As usual ridiculous panic and when we sign someone it will be why have we signed him !!!! January not the easiest time to buy a player .. the fee inflated and most are panic that don’t work out .. we don’t need much reckon two signings and a loan … the owners were caught out with promotion and had planned financially to go up this season .. they never planned to give NJ the 12 mill we got from TV and promotion … so very unlikely to spend big now.eastterrace6168 said:All this panic 'cos we ain't signed anybody yet, January sales don't end for another 3 weeks...😉1 -
