Don't think Apter is worth even considering off loading. There's plenty there to work with with him and I think he's going to get more of a chance once Edwards is back on the other flank.

Maybe even worth a look in the 10 role with players going off the boil there.
Did he actually play in the 10 role for Blackpool? And was he that good at it?
What you’re forgetting is Charlton’s transfer policy is to buy potential from lower divisions for two reasons. The first is budget and the latter we are not attractive to more established championship players. We’ve been languishing league 1 for many years & are rebuilding. Let’s keep focused and be realistic!
At last, some realism has entered the chat. All that sniping and whining was getting insufferable. Like it or loath it, this is our only way forward, unless someone finds the odd billion down the back of the sofa. COYA!
Our owners are very rich btw. One of the two has a net worth of over 3 billion, and the other 400-500 million. These aren't chancers showing front like many of the parasites who have had their claws in us, these are legitimate business men.

I believe a fan who is quite trust worthy was told by Nathan Jones at Wembley that we "are fucking minted"?

It isn't about their money, it's about what they are willing to put in / can put in.

Based on how much we earned through TV money, the promotion transfer leeway, and deals being added into FFP by year, not as an outright sum towards the total, we do have some money knocking about looking at the figures.

It's just whether or not the powers that be are willing to use it.

To play devil's advocate, they currently might be thinking, after allowing you to spend 2.5 million on Apter, 2 million or thereabouts on Harvey Knibbs, 1.5 million on Tanto Olaofe, and almost a million on Costello, and them barely getting a look in, can our recruitment team be trusted spending anymore substantial fees this season?

You are right, they are minted but they’re not prepared to spend it, not like Wrexham and Birmingham are. Wrexham were 46th biggest spenders in Europe this summer. It’s not just fees, some Championship teams have a starting 11 on £40-£50k a week. Our average must be around £12k, that’s a £20m difference straight away. Actual transfer fees are a misleading way of working out a teams player budget. Transfers are spread over the duration of the contract. Knibbs will be costing us £500k a season (is it a three year contract?).

Not forgetting we've still got the Gasman to come back.

Morning everyone. I’ve got a feeling that we are going to announce a signing today as well as beating Chelsea 1-0 with a Matty Godden goal on his return.
Feels like today has finally started.

Small pension sorted. Taking 25% cash tax free and adding rest to existing pot. Just paperwork to do but probably won't be done till February so too late for transfer window.

Meanwhile still no signings for Charlton so this "proves" they have made no calls, made no offers and haven't even realised the window is open.  Everyone should now panic.
  • I see rumblings elsewhere that the owners have “taken us as far as they are prepared to” because we haven’t signed anyone in the first week of the January window.
Our fans as patient as ever then
Tbf we've all known that we needed a LWB since....er....2 months ago. Should have been on the blower then & had someone lined up to come in on Jan 2nd. But a week  has passed & we are no closer to signing anyone......apart from an already injured one.

But it's not easy as that they tell me. Wheels have to be put into motion & cogs have to turn. We also have to wait for club A to sell to club B so that club C can sign player x......

So not putting any money on a fit, ready to go LWB starting against Sheff Utd in 8 days time.
    So much nonsense.

Yes, we've known we need a LWB for months, do you really, I mean really, think they only started looking, short listing and phoning on January 2nd?

Or is it more likely they have been doing all that and more but as you yourself go on to explain there are other factors, other parties, other reasons, that might be in play.

If I said I rang my financial advisor this morning and they said they couldn't instantly shift a pension, arrange a mortgage or a loan and I then whinged and whinged and whinged about how lazy they were or unprepared all financial advisors were you might have a more informed perspective.

We'll sign someone when it's possible, not when we or the club ideally want to.
Love all the digs I get......bring them on I say.

And to answer your point  - if, back in November, you knew your fixed rate mortgage term was ending on Jan 1st, when would you contact your broker/ adviser to make sure you didnt revert to your lenders Standard Variable Rate on Jan 1st ??

But obviously I'm wrong again & happy to be proved it when a new, fit, experienced LWB starts against Sheff U next Sat.

Classic Golfie, say something naive and obvious and when it doesn’t happen somehow claim he was right. If anyone in football actually did read this forum, they would piss themselves with some of our fans whining and logic.

Well, you are right in the first part as we sign defender Waldie from Scotland. Ex Palace.

Do we not have any 'boots on the ground' any more ? There's been a few times this season when new players have signed and we've been told that they were training with us for weeks - does anybody get down there now ? i used to know a few different people - players / staff who could confirm things but not now - surely that would verify the scanlon info if nothing else and make half the posts on here in the last few days redundant.
  • I’m actually happy with Charlton’s recruitment with Gassan the only mistake I feel. I don’t think Jones had anything to do with this transfer. Marc Leonard looks like a Charlton player and could be a realistic signing.

Can we change the threat title from ‘rumours’ to ‘ramblings’?
What a load of old waffle.

There are no transfer rumours & our market place is so limited there’s not too much to say.

Not a rumour but Teden Mengi isn’t even in the squad for Luton today and is not injured. Fits that RCB that we are looking for.

Paid money too (undisclosed) according to her old club's web site.

That would be an interesting one. Would expect he'd have interest throughout the championship but definitely fits the bill of what we would be after.

My main query over the summer business is Knibbs, considering he was the second most expensive signing we made, as we are over stocked with attacking midfielders. We already had Berry (who NJ clearly loves) and Carey signed early in the summer. Plus it's probably Fullah's best position.

At times to incorporate Knibbs, we've moved Carey back into central midfield, where he can do a job but is way less effective. Indeed this first happened when Carey was in his golden run in front of goal.

That money would have been better used in defence, where we are short of options, or in central midfield.

Lower Prem interest too so I’d be shocked if we were anywhere close to being in the running for him.

Good to see the successful team getting priority in terms of cash to spend and getting their business done first before the underperforming men's side are thought about.  Hopefully, Karen gets all her signings completed soon so Rodwell and Chapple can then start working on Nathan's wanted list.

Get what you mean, but had Carey got injured we’d have been relying too much on Berry and Fullah, who NJ wouldn’t have wanted to overplay for different reasons. We lack goals in the squad, having fewer goalscoring midfielders would have only made that worse.

But that applies to every position on the pitch, you can't have 3 senior pros for every place. Especially when we have so little cover elsewhere on the park.

In a crisis Apter or Campbell could play attacking midfield, it would be far more natural for them than playing as a wing back...

I find the ‘working so hard he’s sleeping at the training ground’ rhetoric absolute nonsense. He’s a place literally within the same borough, a 10 min Uber.

What the hell has to be done late at night at the training ground that can’t be done via a phone or laptop?
Maybe he uses the phone at SL to call Babestation, thereby not incurring costs himself.
Babe station ? Do you have the number ? Asking for a friend of course  :#

Signing Knibbs didn’t stop us bringing in anyone though, given we brought in Hernandez and Rousillon after the window closed, and intend to make signings this month.

I don’t think we’d have spent all the Knibbs money on a CB or WB either, as the issue is around depth in those positions, rather than needing a first choice.
