I hope Scanlon isn’t a panic signing at LB like Hernandez and Roussilon and is actually going to be match fit relatively soon

I am going to judge him very negatively if he hasn't got it right by early February.

Can anyone see if Scanlon has actually played any games for Liverpool's youth teams this season.

Tried looking but ESPN says zero appearances.  If that is accurate we surely wouldn't touch him.  Spent last season with Millwall, played a couple of games, was described by their manager as a very attacking LB then got a stress fracture of his back and was out for 4 months.  Came back and immediately did his hamstring in Feb so badly he had to have surgery which was said to keep him out for 4 months.  Millwall manager being quoted then as saying it was a shame for the lad but he wouldn't have got many more minutes at Millwall then anyway given other players they had bought in.

So in theory should have been fit start of this season.  If he's not played any academy games it would be mad to take him imo.

No he hasn't played @Athletico Charlton

I understand the concern about injuries but he's the kind of calibre player we can't usually get close to. Look after him well and it might help next season's recruitment too

Calibre of player we can’t usually get close to? Playing devils advocate here, but if the quotes above are accurate then the Millwall manager said he wouldn’t have got back in their team last season.

I’ve never heard of him so no idea what he’s like, but surely it’s a massive risk that our problem is injuries and needs a short term fix, it’s seems we are looking at a player that hasn’t played in a year?

This is a snip from the article I found...

However, Neil also hinted that Scanlon might not have featured heavily even if he had remained fit:

“Callum, if I’m honest, wouldn’t have played the minutes with the bodies we have in. He played those games in succession due to the fact we had very limited options available at that point. Hence the fact we’ve done what we have in the window.”

I think they jad bought in the LB lad from Chelsea on loan they then went back for this summer on a perm.

Yeah they brought Zak Sturge in the same window and made that a permanent in the summer.

But that's because they brought in new players to replace him, not because he wasn't good enough in the first place. The kid is an England youth international, the only one of those we've had play for us recently is Thierry Small who I think was a bit of a coup. Our recent loan signings have been Bree , Gilbert, McIntyre and Allan Campbell, all unwanted over 21 players. The last time we were loaned a genuine hot prospect was JRS and that was his first loan. We don't get sent good loan players, partly because we've been in L1 and partly because of NJ. I still stand by the fact his quality is usually someone we can't get.

The injuries I agree are a risk but Chapple, Jones and Rodwell get paid the money to evaluate if the risk is worth it

Millwall signed him, he got injured, so they replaced him. So when he returned they had replaced him. It still remains fact that Millwall signed him because he’s a championship level player, and this is a Millwall team that were pushing for the play offs.

It’s a huge gamble and one I disagree with us taking in our situation, but if it pays off he will be a very good signing

Bree had barely played when we signed him and has now played a lot of minutes for us, albeit some while carrying a niggle. Younger injury prone players are less of a risk than older ones.

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of a new plumber.
He was asked if he could fill in at LWB, but stated  "I'm not sure I could handle the drop in wages"  🪠

I'm sure Scanlon is a good player but absolute madness to be signing a player coming off such a long lay off with ZERO minutes played this season - hasn't even kicked a ball at U21 level ffs.

And (probably due to said niggle) his form has dropped dramatically. Signing a fit and firing Scanlon is one thing, firing one who will inevitably be rusty and potentially injury prone is another.

The solution to having too many defenders with fitness issues really shouldn't be sign another defender with fitness issues.

It's not ideal but equally the players who have been playing every minute this season typically aren't available. Edwards is back training so it's possible the club aren't willing to splash out on a LB who has been playing every week to then have him fall behind Edwards again. I hope it's not that though because if we've proven anything this season it's that we need two LWBs competing if we're going to get anywhere. Seems a lot to be throwing Scanlon straight in if Edwards isn't ready to at least be on the bench

Harry Clarke a confirmed target from Cawley , quote from Kieran McKenna about Clarke being in talks with a club.

    Seriously?

If so, I look forward to welcoming him to the Charlton convalescence home for injured footballers.

Our home is different to others in that we pay people to come and stay here instead of residents having to pay to stay.

If you’re signing players from clubs higher than us in the football pyramid then they obviously aren’t going to have played much or any football this season, otherwise they wouldn’t be available

Scanlon is definitely a huge concern, but with Clarke I really don’t see the problem.

You basically have a choice, sign someone who’s been playing every week in league 1 but as we’ve seen that might not mean they are good enough in the championship. Or you sign someone from the Championship like Clarke, he’s available because he’s out of favour so hasn’t played, but he is championship level. Personally I’d rather sign the championship level player that hasn’t played rather than a league 1 player playing every week. That is the choice we are having to make
