Bidwell would make sense with plenty of champ experience but I can understand Coventry wanting that down the stretch if JDS got suspended or injured. Brau looked incredibly lightweight against us.
  • I don’t think anyone is saying our scouts have been idle or that we havnt got a list of targets. It’s who and how good those targets are and will they be able to come in and improve us. I’d say Dykes and Clarke are nothing much better than we currently have. Not players that are going to impact our season. Getting relegated is going to cost us much more than loosening the purse strings a little more than we would want. I think we’re in a relegation scrap and nothing I’ve seen so far in this window convinces me that’s going to change.
Dykes already has an assist in a 1-0 win, so well on the way to impacting our season.

    All good then.

Some realistic LWB's who are out of contract (possibly) in 2026 are few and far between but there are some out there.  In just over n hour of messing about in Wyscout this evening I've found a few I like the look of.

Haydon Roberts 23 yo at Bristol City.  Can play LWB / LB / LCB but isnt the biggest so might not be suitable as a replacement for Gillesphey.  Struber has said he is free to leave if he gets an offer but would be equally happy if he chose to stay.  Was a regular before falling out of favour.

Jeriel Dorsett 23 yo at Reading.  LCB but maybe not attacking enough to be a LWB.  Taller and can play LCB and LB.  We did look at him in the past but his agent never returned the call and we moved on.

Elliot Stroud 23yo at Mjallby in Sweden.  More of a winger but also covers at wingback but i'd need to see more footage.  Handy eye for goal, takes set pieces well and has a mean diagonal delivery too..  Very sturdy too so would fit in with the rigours of Championship football.  Wouldn't be free but is out of contract at the very end of 2026 so maybe an option.  26 goals and 12 assists in the Swedish top flight in 127 games is a very decent contribution from midfield; however, his side were the surprise winners of the league last season so it would be a big ask to get him to leave there.  That being said the Championship is significantly better by all metrics than the Allsvenskan (crowds, money, values).  Has an English passport too i believe

I've enjoyed doing this little bit of research as I have not been able to do too much of late.  Maybe I'll ask the club for a job for a little while :-)

Of course I have no idea what sort of budget we are looking at and I don't know the inner worling of these players at their respective clubs.  But coming up with an "outside the box" option isn't impossible.

I'm sure we have fingers in many pies but we, as a fanbase, need to remember there are multiple facets to a player transfer (buying club, selling club, the player's wants and the domino effect of other players in the chain).  Things will all become clearer in a couple of weeks, and until then, we need to keep the faith

Any of them play for Luton in the past?
  • That Stroud sounds like an interesting prospect. It would be nice to start looking abroad

As I said on the Bree thread Rob Apter is left footed so why have we not tried him there?
    He has played at LWB
Once. Didnt do a bad job.

NJ had right footed TC at LWB and left footed Rob at RWB in at least two games. Madness!!!
I've been told its called "inverted wingers" and it's all the rage. Also got shouted down by someone saying don't I remember Jonny Robinson playing on his "wrong" foot.

We can all be relieved that at least Alex Fergusson realised that most of it is baloney otherwise David Beckham or Ryan Giggs wouldn't have got game time for Man U.
Giggs and Beckham were slightly better at crossing the ball than anyone we have.

He's just thrown four interceptions in the first half against the Patriots though so I don't think he'd be the answer
  • Regarding Edwards possible return WIOTOS, otherwise it's just idle chat...🤔
It won't be on the official site though will it.
Jones's policy is to say pretty much fcuk all about injuries, so rumours and hearsay are pretty much all we have
  • Is Max Lowe any good.  Takeover of Sheffield Weds not yet gone through and he is out of contract in the summer.

I’ve got a feeling we are going to announce a signing today. 😉

With Bree going back and Z Mitchell not playing for Hibs maybe Clarke will actually be out RWB and Z Mitchell is used as the RCB cover
Zach is now back. Obviously it isn't ideal but wouldn't be surprised if this is the plan going forward

Clarke, Ramsay and Apter for RWB
Ramsay, Burke, Clarke, Mitchell and Gough for RCB

I think that’s enough options for the right side of defence. Don’t expect Mitchell to get much game time but at least if we have another injury crisis we’ve got another option

Now just need to sort the left side out

Mitchell/Burke might be able to take 5/10 mins off Jones if we’re ever comfortable in a game too

Imagine the uproar if we signed a player from the National League South to play in our first team.
Saw him live before Christmas, far far far too lightweight for League football. Great setpieces but that's about it.

Feels like he's gone to Farnborough for the same reasons at Richard Chin
Not to get a feel for Senior Football, but to help him get noticed at that level, and end up on a better Contract elsewhere, same for Hobden - If we were serious about his development, he'd only have gone to the NLS on a month long loan etc.

I've seen all our loanees at NLS level down at Worthing and only Casey looked like there might be something there. Hobden looked a long way off too.

NLS is probably what they'd aim for if they get released in the summer.

We brought Alfie Doughty back from Bromley and chucked him in.
no idea what Bower is like tbh

Bromley were in the National League, and we'd already played him in the League Cup
Bower from recollection, has never been around the First Team, not even in an EFL Trophy tie

Would have loved to see Enslin get a chance, particularly where we had more experience on that other side but may have been a hiding to nothing if he's not ready for it

We also chucked in James Vennings and Ben Dempsey around the same time. All three were done because we were desperate and had no chance of doing any better. I’d like to think circumstances are different now.

I’ve watched plenty of u21 streams this season and last season (🤓 Football Manager research) and I wasn’t surprised when he went on loan to non-league.

Unfortunately not all u21s have first team potential, they need enough players to put out a team. Some of the u21 squad of the squad are therefore hard working, reliable players who can have good pro or semi pro careers, but lack in certain areas that are needed at first team level.

Bower might work his way up the leagues in time, but he’s unlikely to have the pace and physicality to make it in the Championship. He has a good left foot and is a steady player, but that’s not enough for our first team.

Enslin would be a better option, but I imagine the concern is him coping defensively and being too one footed.

I don't even know where Vennings is playing anymore? Ben Dempsey I think is at Ayr United??

Vennings is at Braintree, made 26 appearances this season in the NL

If the rumor about Josh being out for the season is true they need to break the bank and get a strong LWB option in quickly or we will go down. If NJ is insistent on playing 532 that needs to be a priority.
You will have an injury-plagued ex-Luton player and like it.
