Remember him well. So sad to read too that he suffered from dementia in his later years.

    RIP David

Captain when I first started watching us. Fine player and a shrewd purchase. RIP.
  • Met him in the 1990’s when he was running a sports centre in Gillingham. Nice bloke. RIP.

A really fine player and the key defender in our 1974/75 promotion side. An excellent signing for £20,000 who very significantly improved our back line, as well as adding important experience and leadership qualities.

    RIP

Great player and a really nice guy who I knew had been suffering from Dementia. I have played Golf with Dave many times as we are both members at Rochester & Cobham GC.
  • Watched the Big Match highlights of a Crystal Palace vs Charlton game on YouTube only a week or so ago. We lost 2-1. Peter Taylor skippered Palace and Young was Charlton’s captain and each of them spoke for a bit to the cameras before the highlights started. Our back four that day was Bob Curtis, Bobby Goldthorpe, Young and Harry Cripps.

    Aah what a shame.

I remember David mostly for THAT game at Brighton when it rained incessantly and the pitch had massive puddles.

It was 8th March 1975 (just looked it up) we drew 1-1.
One of the goals, the ball almost floated across the line in the water.
I think it was our goal & Mick Kelly scored it (an equaliser).

Young was on the cover of the programme from that game, after that, with a clenched fist gesture (I think for a whole season).

I think we called that Kelly "Mike". Mick Kelly was a decade later and a goalkeeper.
