Haydon Roberts (a left footed defender who I think we were briefly linked with in the summer?) has joined Reading on a permanent deal.1

Didn't Cawley mention on Saturdays podcast that an agent had said Sheffield United had an ad for a midfielder on there and they were looking at £300kpm on wages? Makes sense as a system for clubs.fenaddick said:
Not sure if it's a feature on Wyscout or not but lots of clubs use Transfer room to advertise what they're looking for and bedgetswords_alive said:
Probably true and it can't be a secret that we are short there. Wondering if the scouting apps, like Wyscout, have 'wants' from clubs or agents to act on wants, or is it just players available for clubs to go after?fenaddick said:I'm filing this away with the Bosnian striker rumour, our name just being used by agents because we have a hole there in our squad
Looking at https://www.hudl.com/en_gb/products/wyscout
-seems it's a growing industry with video analysts worldwide.
TIA @Swisdom if any comment on state of scouting today and what CAFC actually use, if you feel able to comment?

The fact he’s had wingers play next to him makes his decisions to wander into no man’s land even more ridiculous.sam3110 said:Gillesphey's positioning was his best attribute last season so I doubt it's solely down to him "wandering into no man's land".
To say he's not affected by who's playing next to him is to not understand the notion that it's a team game and you defend as a unit
And yes, it is no man’s land, just have a look at the chances created against us in the last 2 games alone, further back if you want, you’ll see it’s a recurring theme. He goes into areas he simply shouldn’t be in, picking up space as he does it, leaving Jones to take care of 2 attackers, the space left behind Gillesphey, and where the ball is going to be played.

Jones has done it again! After enjoying a successful loan spell with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock in the second part of the 2022/23 campaign, the defender was handed his Liverpool debut by Jürgen Klopp in the Reds’ 3-1 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in September 2023.
He then earned three Europa League appearances – including starts against Toulouse and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise – before spending the latter half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Wigan Athletic.
The Europa League minutes (137) came in full rotation under Klopp, and his EFL Cup debut lasted 1 minute.
Are we signing a Europa League calibre player here? Jones has done it again!
Love that you felt the need to explain he only played under rotation though, as if somehow everyone here was thinking we'd signed Liverpool's first choice wingback or something.
Also enjoyed you found out how many minutes he'd played to continue the moan. Top class dedicated moaning. Keep it up and you'll be a Golfie one day my son.
It's shocking, I know, but I can support the team whilst calling out poor recruitment.
Let's come back to evaluate this signing in 4 months and see how it went. You look<ing up how many minutes he’s had in his - 3 appearances for Liverpool in the Europa league - as something to then try to use to justify him as being a bad signing is just ridiculous, you realise that right?I recommend evaluating all signings after you’ve seen them play at least a little bit so yes, 4 months time sounds perfect. The majority of his senior minutes are at League One and Scottish Premiership level, and he’s coming off a nine-month back injury. That’s the point I was making. You knew that. You brought up his Europa League appearances, so it’s reasonable to look at the context and volume of those minutes.
I hope he’s a success. I’m also entitled to be sceptical based on the evidence we have right now.1 -
And again you're missing the point, Gillesphey is moving into these positions because he's got a dead slow midfield infront of him and a winger playing left wing back, that in the first half in particular last night, wasn't actually tracking back and playing wing back at all, and instead was moping about on the touchline. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, because if he doesn't try and move up and close the space, leaving space in behind him, all the opposition do is drive into the gap he's leaving where TC and Anderson/Coventry should have been, and people will accuse him of being too passive and timid.Sage said:

FWIW I don't think he's good enough at this level, but to suggest he's just aimlessly wandering about the pitch is wrong6 -
I’m sorry but I can’t have that - what on earth is he doing as the third most forward player here? There’s no one else to blame for this but Macca.sam3110 said:

Stepping up to win the ball is good - Lloyd Jones does it all the time. Stepping so far into the opposition half that you’re left stranded when you meant to be an important piece of our defensive structure is just negligence.
Anderson is deeper than he should be in an attempt to fill the gap but then he doesn’t know whether to press or stand off. And it leaves a massive hole. Others aren’t perfect but they’ve been put into bad situations by Gillesphey.16 -
Go through highlights of us this season and you'll be able to screenshot the same thing with Jones, Ramsay, Bell and Burke at some point, it's a feature of the way we play. But because Gillesphey does it and got caught out, and it's recent, it sticks in the memory12

Campbell has been given grief after making lung busting runs to get back, and then you see it is Jones or Burke coming across and wonder “where’s Gillesphey”. Happened last night.
I was watching on TV so could not see, but he was not where he should be.
That photo is a killer. Campbell is bottom middle. His wing back! 7 attackers. Where is he going and what does he think he is going to do when he gets there? He is just not thinking as a defender.0 -
Recruitment generally positive so far this year. I think a good window for Jan. Already see great things from Clarke and Dykes. Will be watching the left back with enthusiasm to see how he goes. There is no way at this stage of our development, at this level, we are signing the best players. It will take a few years for us to compete with those established teams and there will always be teams with a higher budget.Blame all the previous shit show owners for this. I would expect managing recruitment in football is far harder than the Football Manager scenarios that many think it is. Recruitment in normal companies is hard enough these days! And this is also very easy to get 'wrong'.18

Macca played 4 games for Plymouth in the Championship. He's played 25 games for us already in the Championship. He was more than decent in a handful of games (goals/assists too), but in a prolonged spell, teams unpick weaknesses very quickly at this level. The management team got us into that situation and are responsible for our weak left-hand side, which until mid-January consisted of the following. It irked me hearing Rodwell admit as much in a candid manner while stroking his beard oil yesterday.BellEdwardsGillespheyHernandezRoussillon2

Hoping we bring in a LCB today (not expecting it). Would be great to go to The Den with a proper, functioning left side to our defence.9

Absolutely this Sam! Completely agree with you! Would Ferdinand have been the defender he was without Vidic the other side of him? Terry with Carvalho?sam3110 said:Gillesphey's positioning was his best attribute last season so I doubt it's solely down to him "wandering into no man's land".

The problem is that if Gillesphey does get caught out, he's toast. All the other three have either better pace, better alertness to the danger, or both and as such can at least sometimes rectify the issue. Gillesphey... cannot.sam3110 said:Go through highlights of us this season and you'll be able to screenshot the same thing with Jones, Ramsay, Bell and Burke at some point, it's a feature of the way we play. Frankly it being a problem across the defence is actually something I do agree with, but the problem is worse when Gillesphey is the culprit.2 -
Someone who can put there foot in please in midfield !1
-
On Gilly, I don't think hes great. I don't think he is really a championship LCB. He has limitations and is definitely someone we should look to upgrade on in the summer. But we have to be realistic about where we are. As a newly promoted side unless we are literally going to replace the entire squad our back up players are going to have limitations and include some league 1 level players. He showed earlier this year that he is capable of doing a job in the right setup and with a proper LWB outside of him. He doesn't have the quality to make up for those around him but with the right quality around him he is perfectly serviceable. The main issue has been leaving him exposed on the left which exposes his lack of pace and weaknesses.9

Think he was wearing Steve Brown's shorts that day.

Even if we did sign one, is it wise to chuck them straight into a game (especially considering the game), when they will have barely trained with their team mates. Would be a huge riskAthletico Charlton said:Hoping we bring in a LCB today (not expecting it). He might not even be chucked straight in on Saturday because he won’t be familiar enough with the way we play or his team mates1 -

Wouldn't surprise me. Their current first choice Killian Cahill who they signed from Brighton in the summer does look a bit shaky so AMB would probably be an upgrade.charlton_hero said:I've heard AMB or Mannion might be going on loan to Orient. Presume it's the former.

We should send Ghillesphey back to Argyle on loan would make a good pairing with Mitchell.0

One thing that Macca is probably better at than anyone else at Charlton is "he's never injured"EugenesAxe said:We should send Ghillesphey back to Argyle on loan would make a good pairing with Mitchell.

It’s one of his best attributes and a reason I’d still keep him around. He is ok enough as a back up in a well functioning defence. I don’t think anyone expected him to play this much, probably including him. He has no lack of effort and that should be commended tooCombeMartin said:

Wrexham are bidding 19 million quid for a striker. We should be all over this25

in all seriousness is it because he doesn't try too hard, playing within himself?CombeMartin said:

He does also put a good cross over, and then there's his occasional goals too, was it 5 or 6 last season ?fenaddick said:
