I've just looked at our squad of 36 players including those out on loan and I reckon Ronnie will narrow it down to 1 player who has a song about samba rythymn 🤣CaptainRobbo said:

Starting to genuinely wonder how much influence Jones had on some of these signings other than the obvious Luton ones.
Apter 2.5 million - pure winger, was never capable of playing in defence, doesn't suit our formation, completely frozen out
Knibbs 2 million - Never really got a chance, Luke Berry getting chances ahead of him
Tanto 1.5 million - similar to Knibbs, never really got a chance despite having a better goals to minute ratio than his competition
Costello 750k? - barely gets a look in
Very odd that we spent almost 7 million on 4 players, 2 of which you expected to start almost every game before the season started, and now 2 of the 4 at least are completely frozen out.10 -

Subbed off vs Sheffield United at HT, and not brought on until the 72nd minute against Derby.5 -
Next big money signing needs to be an athletic (ie not Doherty) number 8 with championship standard ball control/passing (ie not Karoy Anderson.)
Will prob cost us 3-5 mill to get standard we need, but is something the team is crying out for whatever formation we play.
Should be priority number 1 in summer window.34 -
Declared a better transfer window than 2011/2012 though before a ball was kicked.J BLOCK said:

I have no words._uptheaddicks said:From a Cawley article in early Dec:
Asked if that meant the Addicks needed to move swiftly from January 1, when the transfer window opens, Jones said: “Yes, we are and that is all ongoing.
“We always try to move quickly - we are very rarely scrambling and scratching our heads and then taking someone late in the window. That is not us. We are always very organised and identify the personnel - then we go from there.
It's not really a personal view to now say we failed to deliver on those words?4 -

My concern is, were some of these players signed without Jones green light.
Jones/our recruitment advisors might be either pants at identifying players, or they didn't have a say. There is of course option 3 where it just turns out the signings weren't/haven't been good enough, but it's just odd they haven't even really had a chance to show it0 -

I’ll stick with CL.Swisdom said:
Wyscout is a massive database that pulls in agent info, contract expiries and values from Transfermarkt. It also has a shed load of stats and a really powerful search facility depending on your filters.fenaddick said:
Not sure if it's a feature on Wyscout or not but lots of clubs use Transfer room to advertise what they're looking for and bedgetswords_alive said:
Probably true and it can't be a secret that we are short there. Wondering if the scouting apps, like Wyscout, have 'wants' from clubs or agents to act on wants, or is it just players available for clubs to go after?fenaddick said:I'm filing this away with the Bosnian striker rumour, our name just being used by agents because we have a hole there in our squad
Looking at https://www.hudl.com/en_gb/products/wyscout
-seems it's a growing industry with video analysts worldwide.
TIA @Swisdom if any comment on state of scouting today and what CAFC actually use, if you feel able to comment?
https://www.transferroom.com/
There is a module for clubs to put their requirements which I used to have access to but then Wyscout got bought out by Hudl and the prices went silly.
Best of all is the ability to get a load of highlights of most players for various parameters (goals, assists, key passes, defeding duels etc) but they too are painfully expensive now. I not get 75 minutes of clips a month of clips and all the data i can look at but it's about £100 a month and I'm looking at alternatives for next season.
Transferroom is, im told, pretty good, but they charge horrific amounts of money to use it and once you start representing more players, they then bump the prices. I know a guy who represents his two sons (one of whom is at Charlton). He got Transferroom in 2024 and ended up paying £20k for a 3 year contract (they don't like people signing up for short-term contracts. It's better suited to larger entities or clubs who can put in what they need and a rough nudget. I did pay for some output from someone who worked there but the data wasn't especially well laid out and was out of date. So I wasted £300 with some scumbag scammer basically to provide me with some crap screenshots off his phone.0 -
I agree, with you, it does look odd that he clearly doesn’t fancy some of these players. But he told anyone that would listen that he was ‘manager’ and would have the final say.Braziliance said:

Knibbs was a jones player he said he was a fan of his and wanted him. The apter one is the most puzzling but I think he was desperate for a small replacement and saw apter as a project to fufill that role? A completely failure though he’ll never be a wingback. Mbick, Gough and Fullah should be our future. If the £ signs get the better of our billionaire owners I wonder how much longer any of them will last.2

We’d probably be even more open with a back 4 though. Last time we tried it we were torn apart by Boro and had to switch quickly back to a 3Sword65pf said:
If we have the players to start a particular formation we shouldn’t worry about some one getting injured and having to change, deal with it if happens. I think peoples reasoning for not playing a back four is generally, we’d be too open. My question to that would be, and you don’t think we are already? If we were not letting in goals so easily at the moment I’d be more inclined to agree. I’d be going 4-3-3/4-5-1 and choose players based on how defensive you want to be.elbiglad said:
Despite a couple of suspect games recently, Ramsay absolutely has to start.Southbank said:It's possible with Chambers in the side we could switch to four at the back. This would enable TC to play as a winger while still keeping two strikers. Something like this.

Clarke Burke Jones Chambers
Coventry JRC Carey
Leaburn Kelman TC
It's a tough decision when it comes to the formation. The primary reason to go four at the back - to me - would be to create a system where we have two out of TC / Apter / Fullah attacking defenders rather than worrying about defending. I don't see it making us more defensively solid, but there's a chance it improves our ability / options on the ball; although we have proven having more of the ball is not always a good thing for us! I think the majority of our CB options only really work in in a back three / five: Clarke, Bell, Gillesphey and Ramsay. Jones and Burke is the only pairing I'd trust and we cant rely on Burke to play consistently.
I have said elsewhere that there is a huge risk starting with a back four with an injury prone left back. It only needs Chambers to pick up an injury for it to mean Macca at LB, a change in formation, or a right sided player at LB. So for me unless we get another out and out LB in I'd stick with the five for now, with the four as an option later in the game.
3 at the back should continue to be plan A, and I think it definitely will. The reason we are open is we haven’t had a LWB for months. We know that when we have a proper team we are fine at this level, I’d be waiting to see if that’s still true before dramatically changing things mid seasonNot even sure changing formation would get more out of our attack. None of our strikers are good enough at this level to play as a lone striker imo, and are Apter and TC really good enough at this level to make up for us probably conceding more goals. Unlikely1 -

With the right players, a back 4 would be very solid, e.g. Ramsay, Burke, Jones, Bell, with Ramsay and Bell being fairly defensive full backs.NabySarr said:

As 7 million sitting on the bench most days is not a good look.
Still think Knibbs and Apter would be two of our best players if they started more/got more of a chance. Shame we won't find out re- Knibbsy.

Important to remember that Chapple and Jones didn’t really have time to build an infrastructure together for the last window. This summer’s window will be much more instructive in my opinion

Apter in particular has been unlucky. If it wasn’t for the fact we haven’t had a LWB since Josh’s injury then Apter would have had a lot more game time. There is definitely a good player in there. We have him on a four year deal and he will prove his worth well before that.26

Unfortunately plan A can’t be a plan that relies on Burke and Bell being fit to play every game. That back 4 would be fine but take any of Burke, Jones or Bell out and we would be strugglingkillerandflash said:

I found Rodwell and Carters comments about PC being abroad a lot quite interesting. I am expecting a bit of a change of tack in transfer strategy in the summer away from the best of L1 and more towards untapped worldwide markets.fenaddick said:Important to remember that Chapple and Jones didn’t really have time to build an infrastructure together for the last window.
