Win the game in hand and we're 10 points clear of 3rd and 11 from 4th

Great that Bristol City dropped a couple of points too.

Not that I care about that red and blue stripy team, but their season has been surprising. You’d expect them to be challenging at the top of the league after coming down from the WSL, but only 5 league games ago, they were 3rd or 4th from bottom. Now though, they’ve hit some form, winning 5 in a row including 4-0 against Durham today, and they’re right in the mix for promotion. I feel like we might be grateful for their poor start come the end of the season. Fingers crossed! 😎

Superb professional performance at the end there. Newcastle had no clear cut chances really after they scored and we could have had a third if Kenney had got a bit luckier with her chop back across. N'Dow had an absolutely imperious performance at the back, her best in a while and I'm not having either of those penalty shouts, both sent at her from less than a yard away. I thought it was Flannery's best performance for us since she joined, snapped into everything all over the pitch and was much more composed on the ball than I've seen her before, it's the most control we've had in midfield and it came from her. Lockwood looked decent when she came on, likely offers more than Thestrup who continues to try but lacks output. Fitzgerald also had a good game and showed great composure for the assist for the first goal. That's 6 points off a high spending Newcastle team this season, superb return

Looks like maybe 200 away fans. Although that may be including a few Addicks in block F.
Yes I was in Block F, so not every one there a toon.

A big, big win made possible by a brilliant performance in the first half and a display of great resilience in the second.

Newcastle had one real chance in the first half, when their player was left alone at the far post only to shank a volley harmlessly off target. Other than that, although they had a fair bit of possession, we were at our best: we shut them down, played with lots of energy and caused them problems down both flanks. Jodie Hutton's opener was an example, the ball eventually falling to her to slam into the roof of the net after neither Karin Muya nor Lucy Fitzgerald were quite able to do it themselves. And it was Muya who was fouled for the penalty, which Katie Bradley took expertly.

We were under more pressure in the second half as Newcastle dominated the ball and tried to get back into it. Their goal came after Muya lost the ball in our own half, the ball was played across the box and Sevenius side-footed it low beyond the dive of Sophie Whitehouse. But we managed the game cleverly so that they were never able to build up a head of steam, and the most that Whitehouse had to do was collect a couple of crosses and field one long-range effort straight at her. We kept the ball in the corner for a good chunk of added time, and there were no genuine heart-stopping moments as we saw the game out.

Two players stood out in particular on a day when no one was less than a 7 out of 10. Player of the Match for me was the outstanding Elisha N'Dow, who did everything she had to do with the composure we've come to expect from her, and even went on a run down the right-hand side in added time, which helped us get up the pitch and ate up the clock. And Keira Flannery was excellent in midfield, shielding the defence and working tirelessly to harass the Newcastle players and force them back (she also nearly set up a third for us after winning the ball high up, though a defender got back before Gillian Kenney could get the shot away). She has played an enormous part in our defensive record throughout the season – her absence would leave a big hole to fill. But as I say, everyone can hold their heads high after that: I thought Gloria Siber was our weakest player today, losing out in a couple of duels after she could have got the ball away quicker, but she still did well at other times, especially for someone playing out of position at right-back.

We've talked about the mentality in this squad, and today was a prime example. It was noticeable that after each successful bit of defending (shepherding the ball out for a goal kick, intercepting a potentially dangerous through ball etc.) the players were high-fiving each other and demanding more. Karen Hills deserves endless credit for creating that environment and maintaining those standards – we'll need every bit of it to get promotion.

    COYA!

    740 crowd.

Charlton only had 30% possession. Went defensive at 2-0. Could have blown it.

Our average possession this season is 38.8%, the lowest in the league. Doesn’t really matter when you’re set up to score and then refuse to concede. We rank highest for clean sheets and goals conceded per match at 0.5. The next closest is Birmingham with 1.1. Newcastle created 0 big chances to our 3. We just carried out our usual game plan and succeeded yet again.

I thought Muya had the best game I have seen from her this season, especially in the first half. She won so many tackles and came away with the ball, she stopped their attacks and I reckon a third of the time set off a Charlton attack by winning the ball, also got forward and caused concern for their defense. Was running out of steam by 60mins. Ndow was a rock in defense as well, loved that run down to their corner from our area to then hold the ball for a minute or two.

Palace are already promoting our away match there, which has been moved to Selhurst. Could be a biggie!

Their one point behind Bristol City (and 8 points behind us) so it could be big for both.

If our women can keep this unbeaten streak up then promotion could be secured by April (a win at Bristol/Palace could do it).

Would be nice to get promotion sorted by then, so we can focus on a potential WFA Cup Quarter Final instead of the Pompey game.

LCL won it last year with 43 points. Additional team in this league this year (12 instead of 11) so likely to be 45-46 to win it.

5/6 wins from remaining 10 games should do it.

Glad the club got it out on the CAFC Women Channel quickly this time. Is there a rights issue, or are the club unable to produce their own highlights?

Was talking at the Swindon (WFA Cup) game that Birmingham game could be a title decider (with both clubs having got promotion by that point).

*- Again would like promotion to be mathematical by this point, so they can focus on the cup. Was thinking about having a mini promotion party type thing at the Oak (in May)**, but wouldn't say no to Box Park Wembley on the 31st May 🤔

**- Understand this would be in poor taste if the Men's team sink.

  • Looking back at how many points the team finishing 3rd has ended up on in the 3 22 game seasons that have taken place:

    2023/24: 41
    2022/23: 45
    2021/22: 37

So 46 should be enough, that means we "only" need 16 points from 10 games.

It should be lower, as the maximum Bristol City can now get to is 50, with Palace and Newcastle able to get to 49.

Forest can get to 46, with Southampton and Sunderland able to get to 45.

Realistically unless us or Birmingham have a significantly worse second half of the season, and they got on a ridiculous run those last 3 are almost already out of it. 2 from 5 for me now.

3 of our next 4 against sides in the bottom 4. If we can find a way to start beating the teams we should beat we could be almost there after that run.

    End of March looks interesting:

    22 March:
    Newcastle Vs Palace
    Bristol City Vs Charlton

    29 March:
    Bristol City Vs Birmingham
    Palace Vs Charlton
