The whispers pre Coady remind me of the whispers pre Appleton.
The theory of the wisdom of crowds has a degree of scientific truth.3 -

Same, after what we’ve been through over the last 20 years I’m all for a super rich and ambitious ownership bringing exotic signings at £10m a time.J BLOCK said:

There’s nothing “fun” about that at all. The biggest transfer fee we’ve paid for a player dates back 25 years and for some reason I like that fact. Birmingham have just bought a player in January that’s more than we’ve ever paid for a player.
The club prides itself on it’s academy and has a great track record, the focus should be in part to make it a Cat 1 facility and build players through this as well as some investment into the first-team budget.I know some of you will disagree with me but I’d point you to a) some of the absolute shit that’s played for the club where we have spent a bit of money and b) the owners we have had across our history that have been woeful.6 -
But under the financial rules we can't do that?Scoham said:

I'm kind of against football being owned by American oligarchs tbh1

Shame the West Ham CM won't be Freddie Potts as he finally seems to have broken into their first team squad.1

The teams already at the top like to keep it that way.0 -

I mean not sure if those are all loans and either way I suppose there's questions about their age etc but at least in terms of numbers/positions that sounds pretty good... if it comes off.robroy said:Some rumours on the other forum.
West Ham have offered us a CM playmaker on loan.
Then 21yr old striker from Fulham and a defender from Chelsea.
Also a perm.

The constant daily moaning demanding perfection is exhausting to read.I get the frustration has grown ten-fold since Saturday, it was a pathetic and unacceptable display. But moaning about every single thing the club try to do with player recruitment is ridiculous. They bring in young up-and-coming players, you moan we needed experience. They try to bring in experience, you moan they're not fast enough. We are not going to drop millions of pounds this month on the high Championship quality players you want/expect/demand.

I don't mean to sound patronising, but I think some people's understanding of the nature of the transfer market, i.e how much players are paid, how easy it is to spend money and stay within regulations, is about 15-20 years out of date.
The board have made it clear they want us to be a sustainable football club and as much as that may frustrate us as fans, that is the approach. That does mot mean desperately throwing money around in January. It is not lip service when basically every working manager talks about how hard it is to buy in January: players are over valued and good players are unavailable. I am fully aware of our situation and the dire need for recruitment but it has been made clear what the approach will be.

West Ham CM's
Mohamadou Kante & Preston Fearon have the most U21 minutes this season and both have 3 goals& 1 assist for the U21s
Cannot find a 21yo striker on Fulham's books (apart from one on loan at Yeovil)
Chelsea left sided defenders that might be available (being hopeful with the left sided bit)
Landon Emanalo (Midfielder but been playing at LB as Chelsea U21's seemingly don't have any LB's)
Justin Osagie (left footed, plays LCB for U21s)
Kaiden Wilson (Left footed CB, seems most likely to me)8 -

I'm with AFKA here. I understand that "if" we operate within our budget, which is deemed bottom 3, then the players we are looking at make sense. What I don't understand is "why" we have that budget. I mean what is the point? It just seems a really odd strategy to get promoted, then put the absolute minimum in needed to be competitive, and hope that's enough, with a genuine risk that we get relegated and have to start again.I agree that spending is no guarantee of success, but not spending is a pretty sure fire way of not succeeding. We gave ourselves the best chance by starting really well, but the lack of depth and injuries have shown we just don't have the quality to survive, unless we are proactive and get ahead of it. We shouldn't be sitting at the end of Jan wondering whether we are "lucky" enough to sign Conor Coady. It's an odd high risk strategy.12

Fair point. But the question is then would being promoted/relegated on a regular/semi-regular basis actually BE sustainable as a club? The budget and costs would have to be reassessed for each league and we have the problem we have right now - a good league one team that we never manage to actually evolve into a viable Championship side.elbiglad said:I don't mean to sound patronising, but I think some people's understanding of the nature of the transfer market, i.e how much players are paid, how easy it is to spend money and stay within regulations, is about 15-20 years out of date.

We just throw our money around in the summer and then give the players back, sounds very sustainable.elbiglad said:I don't mean to sound patronising, but I think some people's understanding of the nature of the transfer market, i.e how much players are paid, how easy it is to spend money and stay within regulations, is about 15-20 years out of date.

I know nothing and the thing I understand least is how Lloydy has kept going as long as he has, he's proper is that bloke! And he's my player of the year, even if Matty comes back and scores 20 goals before the end of the season....... well, unless Matty actually does that of course, then all bets are off I'm afraid Lloydy.
Is Coady coming, I don't know but there's only a few days to go before that flipping window closes and someway, somehow we need our defensive nous back and we do badly need cover for Lloydy...... and that isn't Burke or Macca. Coady might well be the best alternative today, he might not have been on Jan 1 but he might well be now.
Hopefully Bell is back soon...... and Chambers will be alright in front of him even though he's only just on his way back to match fitness...... I have a wigan mate who says Chambers was very decent. If Bell can only last a few games before going crook again at least Chambers will be more up to speed when he has to play in front of Macca or whoever.
If we can sign a ball carrying midfielder too, or at least get our midfield to improve their anticipation and also win 50/50 headers/tackles more than they have (back to basics lads), get Matty back for proper minutes and let TC scare them up front these things will help relieve pressure on our back lines.
A bit out of left field but I'm wondering if Chapples visit to Turkey could have been something to do with facilitating a JRS loan until the end of the season........ where's that clutching at straws gif when you need it!
And whether his visit to Japan was anything to do with getting Fukada when his contract runs out in the summer....?

Love the Turkey/JRS theory. 👍0 -
Collins Sichendze Inbound?0

Right footed CB, Vojvodina seem to play a back 4 and he plays on the right. His defensive stats don't fill me with joy neither does his 66% pass completionsammy391 said:Collins Sichendze Inbound?
Edit, just realised I was looking at the wrong %, actually about 85% 🤦

"It was these percentages from the next sale that decided Sichengje to end up in Charlton, since Lale had offers from MLS, Colorado and Luton."
Cutting out the middle man, I like it.30 -
We haven't not spent money though. We spent 10-11m in the summer.blackheathaddick said:I'm with AFKA here. It's a fair and accurate point to say we didn't spend the money well, but it's not as if we've come up and the owners tried to get by only spending 500k.

I would also like to point out that the article has translated his name into Serbian and it's actually Collins Sichenje1

For those moaning we're not spending money, look at where we are in this seasons 'net spend' table (probably a bit outdated with some recent clubs signings in this window).
And in terms of actual money spent, we spent more than 12 other clubs in the division.

Can't see why the JRS/Turkey thing would make sense as we'd be negotiating with the Surrey lot but there's lots of ex EFL talent out there. Fukuda's contract was due to run out this month but he's signed an extension with his clubWrightCharlie said:

I totally agree, and am not an advocate of that strategy. I would love them to spend money and improve the squad drastically. But we have been told that is unlikely to happen.thenewbie said:

I just see people speaking about how much money £10m is for one window, and whilst it is a lot for us in this league it really isn't that much. People are annoyed that we MAY pay Coady £12.5k a week, but - again - in this league it really isn't that much. We are close to the bottom of the food chain. We have to work our way up.
It is not sustainable to buy and loan out six months later, obviously. Just because the Board have committed to that strategy it does not mean they will get it right; there is another discussion to be had about the capabilities of the people in charge.
Yes it is annoying that Apter and Oloafe may go out on loan, but their fees are sunk costs. If their wages and squad slots could be used elsewhere and it allows us to get players in who help us NOW it may make sense to facilitate their moves.
For all the corporate talk of KPIs last week, I think we need to display some nimble decision making. The land has shifted. We are now in a situation where a lack of investment could mean dire consequences. No company should be happy to be ahead of KPIs at the halfway stage if 62.5% of the returns (points) were acquired in Q1. That to me shows we are trending in one way and actions need to be taken. It appears the board have done their risk assessment and are happy to proceed without significant investment.
