Bit ott, he has probably cost about 30 pence... I'd guess AMB wanted to leave to play games at his age and we have signed someone on basically a free transfer as third choice with potential
We do not need three senior keepers, he takes up a squad place. It doesn’t matter how much or little money we’ve spent on him it’s a waste

Every club in the Championship have 3 keepers. why do you want CAFC to be different ? AMB needs to play after being 3rd choice and his time has come to an end.
If we only had 2 and they were injured, we'd be able to sign an emergency loan wouldn't we? Which probably wouldn't be any riskier than starting a lad with only national league experience in the championship.
We would now but wouldn't have been able to with AMB around. Benefit of this is we can see him and decide if we need to make a move
Negative is it takes up a squad space.
  • Ha, so Rodwell tells us that Chapple is flying off to all these exotic locations, whereas he's really shoring up business in Gateshead and Stockport.  Clever, very clever.

Now this is a actual player for the future, not spending 2 mil on a player and sending him back 6 months later.

Third choice behind Kaminski and Mannion, but that's not a bad thing and I doubt we've blown whatever budget we had on this one. Not exciting though.
He's one for the future, donch'ya know?

I wonder why we signed him?

Won't miss his embarrassing feigning injury antics multiple times each game.

he should be on stage in the west end.”

“How did he pass a medical with that injury that made him have to get treatment during every game?”

Ah, that will be why… 🤣

It's better to have a keeper in house than rely on the possibility of a good enough emergency loan being available. Every team wants to have three keepers anyway because it allows you to have a senior keeper on the bench in case of emergency. If your keeper gets injured during a game or gets sent off then you're relying on a youth keeper being on the bench if your first keeper is injured. That can completely turn a game against you.

I get that with someone like AMB who has had plenty of EFL experience but this guy has none, so is it any less of a risk? Though admittedly I have absolutely no idea how good he is!

Given we’re now at 4 loans and presumably will bring in another we wouldn’t be able to play an emergency loan without one of the other loanees missing out on the squad. That’s probably a factor in all of this

He's not even cover, he's cover FOR the cover. If Kaminski is out, Mannion gets the nod and Tiernan is only on the bench. Can't see many EFL experienced keepers being happy with being third choice on Charlton wages - AMB wasn't, for one.

That's kind of my point. We're using a squad place for a keeper with no experience who is very unlikely to play. In the unlikely event it's needed, I'd rather go down the emergency loan route and use a squad place for an outfield player that might improve us. Just my opinion, hopefully Brooks develops well here.

    Talk about a budget signing.
Sorba Thomas came from Non-league and done okay. You do get some gems.
    As did Nick Pope.

Yes, definitely, because the alternative to Brooks, who at least has over 50 National League appearances as a number one, is one of our kids. We want to send them out on loan to develop as players but you can't do that when they're on the bench. Reid has been sent out on loan so you're asking a teenager from the academy potentially to come on in a Championship game. AMB obviously wanted to leave, which as a 26 year old third choice is fair enough, so we either bring in a third choice who trains with the other keepers and the defence every week who we are comfortable throwing in in a crisis and developing him while we have him, or risk throwing a kid in during a game and then having to feverishly try and find an emergency loan from another club and praying that a decent one is available. Much more risky.

Okay, I respectfully disagree given the chances of Brooks playing a minute are slim and the benefits of signing another outfield player could define our season. Anyway will leave it there as just repeating same points now.

Before we write the lad off because he's cheap and from non-league I can think of one keeper we signed from Bury Town and who played for the likes of Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United, Aldershot Town, York City and Bury. He has gone on to become number one at two Premier League clubs and play for England.

Bet AMB is impressed with that...
Doubt he cares.  Just glad to be away.
  • He will be an excellent signing, plenty of experience of picking the ball out of the net already, he can only get better at it with our defence.

I’m not sure of the rules but would he take up a squad place due to his age?

yes, you have to be u21 to not use a place
  • Given the length of contract given to Brooks it seems the club have little faith in any of the under 21 or even under 18's making the grade.

Could turn out to be the best business we've done this window.
