Booked a fairly last minute trip to Sharm el sheikh Egypt.

Both the wife and my jobs are massively busier over winter got to the point where we both are running on empty and need a break.

Fairly budget winter sun destination. A bit of relaxing by the sea and a bit of scuba diving. If I can persuade the wife I'll do my next certification but I'm working on that one. Can't wait to get away and get some sun.
I've been to Sharm 5 times and Hurgada 6 times.
My only advice to anyone travelling to these resorts is don't try and do it on the cheap.
The 3 and 4 star hotels can end up giving to a bad case of the s###ts.
I always book a five star hotel and so far have had no problems.
Hopefully you have booked a decent hotel.
Enjoy your holiday Egypt in the winter is great.
Yeah 5 star resort both for food & facilities and also a 5 star dive resort. Excellent reviews too. Got a great deal by speaking direct to them and being flexible on dates - they basically said if you can take this room on these dates in 3 weeks time you can have 50% off as we want it to go.
I had one two of my best dives there (out of 80). Depending on your experience I would recommend the blue hole near Dahab.
Thanks! I've watched some youtube videos of dives in the blue hole and it looks amazing! certainly on the bucket list. I only got my open water cert fairly recently and have 8 logged dives so not sure if thats achievable for me? I'm planning to do my advanced open water out there and get 10 dives in so potentially fine by the end of the week?

Oh yes. I love England, but the lack of sunshine in winter is a bit much for me.
Aye, this winter has been terrible for SAD. Feels like I haven't seen the sun since October
  • Going back to Cape Verde, 4 young girls who work in our local restaurant here in Portugal went recently and all went down really ill.

Been to Cape Verde (Sal) four times in the past. The first three were enjoyable, the last ruined by TUI’s lies and I was ill. Also, violence against tourists seems to be on the rise.

    Lies? What did they do?

An old friend - admittedly with prior health issues - died on a Cape Verde holiday.  He was staying on a smaller island which did not have a major hospital, and was too ill to be moved.  That incident didn't exactly sell the place to me

Ive been to Montenegro and whilst I was only there for a day I am looking to book a week or so there this year. I have absolutely fallen in love with that part of the world. Kotor is a baby dubrovnik and walking the walls there sorts the men from the mickeys. Absolutely worth it though. Plus if you are staying you can avoid all the cruise ships disembarking people

We've been to Sal twice. First time, loved it. Cape Verde was still relatively unknown. Second time it had exploded and whilst the weather etc was wonderful the town had loat all of its charm and the volume of new hotels was a bit sad to see.

First time it was refreshing how "safe" the place felt, second time much less so. Loads of aggressive begging and looky-looky types.

Wasn't aware of any violence against tourists but I could see how that was the next logical step sadly

Walked up outside the walls through a pomegranate orchard and all the way to the road way up top, had lunch and a couple of beers and hitch hiked down. Cracking half day

You do need to be experienced for the blue hole five and at least an advance diver (dive is to 30m). I suggest you save it for your next visit after gaining your advantage e certificate and some deep dives under your belt. Many experienced divers have died there.

Certainly has become a lot more developed since we went (2005), you couldn't even fly direct there then. We went via Amsterdam and Paris (with Cape Verde Airlines)....though going with TAP via Lisbon was an option, though more expensive. Travelled around a fair bit to 4-5 islands, seems now most people go to Sal or Boavista.

I was on the Boa Vista island of Cape Verde in March 2023 and had no problem other than mistaking wasabi for mushy peas!
Was there in December, no problems (If anyone writes an obituary for me soon, use this post as a Spike Milligan style headstone quote)

We normally stay at The Sunborn - right next to Ocean Village and a short stroll to Casemates Square and Main Street. Often stayed at The Elliot at the other end of Main Street but not since it had a major facelift. Looks good for it and a great rooftop pool.

Now in my final week of three in Costa Adeje. It's been something I've wanted to do for years and now able to, following a protracted divorce.

I appreciate it's not for everyone but apart from money and Charlton, why wouldn't everyone want permanent sun on their backs, cheap food and drink, as opposed to the current English climate being served up? All matches are easily available in the many bars here too.

It's cheap to do. It is only going to cost us £1475 each next January for 4 weeks in an apartment just 150 meters away from Los Cristianos main beach. That includes flights too

Hopefully this will become a staple and regular part of my retirement moving forward

Friends of ours do the long stays as well - usually a month at a time on Zante, May and October. Costs them about £1200 a month for an apartment plus flights.

I think we might start doing it as well. That said, our eldest and family are moving to Malta for a few years so we'll be visiting there regularly throughout the year.

I stayed at the Elliot and it was nice, the time of year I went was a little too chilly to use the pool unfortunately. Thinking of staying in an apartment next time, should be a lot cheaper.

With any luck you will miss the bad weather, it has been awful here for weeks, storm after storm and we have another coming in over the weekend.

I went once to Fuerteventura in January or February and loved it, that place is el scorchio in the summer and as much as I love that I appreciated being there when there was hardly anyone about, weather a but more chilled. There were locals walking about in puffer jackets in the evening but it wasn't cold at all.

We tend to go a bit further afield when going away in winter and I like that, the flight time gets on my tits but love being on the other side of the world feeling like I'm on another planet when the weather is at its most obnoxious here.

We are going to go to the states hopefully coinciding that visit with any of the world cup games being played where we go in June

Then a gang of us going to either Slovenia Croatia or Montenegro in September. Really looking forward to that. We work fucking hard in this country regardless of what anyone says about British workers, not to mention how much we have money pinched from us at every juncture so holidays are needed to decompress (and for me to moan about drop off fees at airports, paying for VIP security lanes and all the other bollocks at airports) to go somewhere people don't care about smoking, parking charges or restrictions, or generally interfering with my life for a week or so

Yesterday was fine in France with a little rain today in Spain. Starting the last drive on Monday, so it’ll be great if the storms are gone.

Currently in Mauritius after flying out Monday afternoon.

The travel agent rang first thing Monday morning to check if we wanted to cancel as they were getting a few last minute cancellations, particularly (obviously) those flying via Dubai. As our flight was direct we were happy to go ahead.

The hotel concierge told us they only have a 70% occupancy with  a number of last minute cancellations mainly due to travel disruption.

I’m hoping the war is over in 4 weeks time as my flight back is from Kathmandu via Dubai (Emirates).
Not sure what my options are if they cancel the flight. Are the airlines responsible for accommodation and/or rerouting the return flight?

January 1st we fly to Auckland where we stay for 10 days and go on various tours, then we join our cruise for 61 nights where we wander around Australia and Asia until we reach Tokyo where we will fly home to hopefully spring, thus missing the vast majority of winter.
A pretty good winter to avoid.

It's clear that plenty on CL are lucky enough to travel.

MrsTT and myself are looking forward to our main trip this year. Another motorbike tour, a new one for us, a Honda ST1300 seeing as you ask 😀.

    Hook of Holland,
    Copenhagen
Malmo Stockholm to see the Vasa
    Finland
Estonia - Narva before Putin flattens it
    Lithuania
    Latvia
    Poland - salt mines
    Ukraine
    Slovakia
Then head back to the Hook of Holland

Not planned anything else specific and no fixed route.

Can I ask a practical question?

For such a trip how do you manage luggage wise for such a long trip. Do you just have to be disciplined and travel ‘light’ or do you have some sort of support vehicle )which I’ve seen for a large group of motorbikes).

    Just curious.
