MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Birmingham City - Saturday 7th March 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs Birmingham City
Saturday 7th March 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: James Linington

Introduction
Charlton play host to Birmingham City this coming Saturday looking to return to a bit of form that had previously seen us losing just the once in six games. Wrexham, as they have done in recent years just didn't read the script ahead of our last encounter and escaped South East London with three points, courtesy of a solitary goal.

The Opposition
Name: Birmingham City (12th) - Manager: Chris Davies
Ground: St. Andrews
Previous Result: Millwall 3-0 Birmingham

Once again the fixture list has throw out a strange sequence of fixtures for both the home, and away team, this coming weekend... For the visitors its back to back weekends in the South East of London, having recently lost 3-0 at the Den, for the Addicks its back to back games against old friends from League One.

Given their spending power in the third tier, you'd have expected Birmingham to have done better this campaign, I mean its not over by any means of the imagination, they sit in 12th, yet are still "only" eight points from the Play-Offs, a game that is entirely manageable in the EFL. However if Birmingham want to reach the Play-Offs, then they need to start closing the points deficit fast, especially on an FA Cup weekend that'll see Wrexham (in 6th) absent from from Championship action this Saturday.

It is however the Away form for the Blues that has perhaps let them down this season, the Addicks left the Midlands with a share of the spoils back in December; Tyreece Campbell scoring his first goal of the season in what was ultimately a 1-1 draw... and whilst Birmingham have lost just the sole game at St. Andrews this season, they've lost 10 on the road... that's more defeats away from home than their hosts this coming Saturday!! - Birmingham do come into the game with form though, despite losing at the Den last week, they've five wins, and three draws from their previous nine fixtures.

In terms of head2head and the Addicks have 24-wins, including a 1-0 goal, courtesy of Matty Godden at the Valley season... Birmingham themselves have 21-wins against the Addicks... Their last win at the Valley coming in 2019, another 1-0 score line, this time coming from a certain: Jude Bellingham.

Charlton Team News
Thomas Kaminski was the notable absentee against Wrexham, the ever present Goalkeeper was missing last weekend with a hamstring injury, with Will Mannion making his debut in the Championship... You'd expect the Belgian 'keeper to be absent once again this weekend with Mannion remaining between the sticks. Elsewhere and Reece Burke was brought into the eleven, making the briefest of returns, before he too was cruelly struck down with injury again. It meant more minutes from the bench for the impressing: Collins Sichenje, who along with Luke Chambers and Conor Coady, could make a return to the starting eleven.

There will be nervous glances at Lloyd Jones, who cant afford another booking if he wants to avoid a two match ban... Those fears will wiped clean come the end of the Oxford match in two games time.

Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Bell
Clarke - Coady - Carey - Chambers
Berry
Campbell - Dykes

Substitutes: Brooks - Sichenje - Gillesphey - Docherty - Fevrier - Coventry - Costello - Leaburn - Kelman

Another game kicking off at the, now, unusual time of 3pm on a Saturday?
    It will never catch on.
  • We win this 1-0.

For my own sanity, please win this. Depending on other teams' results is too stressful

Also, Birmingham's away record isn't great, if we can keep Lisa Stansfield quiet, we've a chance

    • Charlton are looking for consecutive home league wins against Birmingham for the first time since beating them in 2004-05 and 2005-06 in the Premier League.
    • Only one of the last 14 league meetings between Charlton and Birmingham has seen more than two goals scored, a 2-1 Addicks win in April 2016.
    • Charlton have lost 11 of their last 21 league games (W4 D6) – since the start of this run on 8 November, only Sheffield Wednesday (18) and West Brom (12) have lost more Championship games.
    • Birmingham City have lost their last two Championship matches, but haven’t lost three league games in a row under manager Chris Davies before. The Blues last had a longer losing run in March 2024 (four defeats).
    • Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has only won two of his nine league games against Birmingham City as a manager (D3 L4), 1-0 wins with Luton in February 2021 and the Addicks in October 2024.

If the team can take the energy into the game as they did against the 🎪, and turn up against Brum, I believe we can nick a result, coya

Please...don't let Berry start. Doc in for me and push Carey on.
Winnable game for sure. If it goes the same way as Wrexham then we need to take our early chances...well...early! Calms us down and makes Birmingham need to come out more. Must win for them so let's pile that pressure on!

    Charlton 2 - Birmingham 0 ( Dykes, Carey)

Might be a good time to play.them as their play off dream is nearly gone. We so need a home win to banish the fears of the big R. Brum are nothing special despite their outlay. 1-1 honours even.

Just seen who the ref is tomorrow …  James Linington again one of top 3 worst ref ever seen at the valley , plus we not won when he been in charge …. before i saw this I was going to say as long as the ref  does his job correctly unlike the last two games .. we will get something tomorrow … now we not got a hope in hell …..

team news Coady will come back for injured Coventry and Doc needs to come back in .. up top Kelman and Dykes we need goalscorers not an experiment …

Welcome back FA, hope the operation went smoothly.

    Think we'll line up:
    ..................Kaminski
    ...........Ramsay Jones Bell
Clarke Carey Coady Docherty (C) Chambers
    ...............Dykes TC

Expect Brum to have a lot of the ball. Look for us to press and hit them on the counter. Their CBs are good in the air so we'll need TC to get the ball down and run at them. I'd take a draw, I still think they're a decent side that lines up well against us. And they've spent loads of money.

Is Dykes allowed to play?, can’t remember if he’s on loan or not?

Ignore it. FA is just being deliberately provocative. It is how all these internet influencers work. Write or say something manifestly absurd to provoke lots of rebuttals.

Or it may be that he has not entirely cleared the anaesthetics from his brain.  Berry, indeed!  Ha!

Just looked at the fixture list.  With Pompey at Blackburn, Leicester and WBA at Ipswich and Sheffield Utd respectively, I see this as a free hit and I’m not too bothered about the result
