POST-MATCH THREAD: Oxford Utd v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 14th March 2026: KO 12:30
We haven’t done well at the Kassam Stadium in recent years. With Oxford on a late surge to relegation safety, the home side were looking to keep their run of three wins on the trot going, against a Charlton side that are, barring an absolute disaster, very nearly safe. Of course Charlton had their own reasons for seeking a result and were keen to keep their charge up the table going after back-to-back wins against Birmingham and Middlesbrough. Will Mannion kept his place in the squad with Lyndon Dykes set to start but then replaced by Miles Leaburn, due to illness.
This one was off to a scrappy start. The ball bubbled around in the air for much of the first five minutes. It was a long Sonny Carey throw into the box that reached Miles Leaburn’s head and was flicked on to the back post. Greg Docherty’s cross was driven low and hard into the middle but the Addick’s first foray in front of goal was easily scuppered by the Oxford goalkeeper.
Soon after the Addicks began to take more of the possession. Their probing was extensive but not particularly fruitful, as we’ve come to expect. Oxford, conversely, were next to useless in possession. They seemed to fall to the ground at every opportunity and were in the referee’s ear constantly. They misplaced routine passes regularly and suffered losing possession to poor or heavy touches. They looked to be baiting the visitors into making a mistake at the back, engineering a set piece, or hitting on the counter from long clearances. On 14 minutes that strategy almost paid off when a clearance forward split the Charlton defence and would have presented a problem, if not for Harry Clarke’s burst of pace and brilliant use of his body to cut in front of the defender and expert ally barge himself into possession of the ball. Moments later, Clarke was the attacker threatening with a drive into the box and was brought down, but the referee was unmoved.
Another long ball from a goal kick almost caused a mix up at the back when Amari’i Bell’s touch was less than exquisite, but Will Mannion was off his line quickly to intervene and save the defender’s blushes. 22 minutes had elapsed and this one was still a bit frantic. I thought our midfield of Docherty and Coventry were active and positive on the ball but once we got into the final third it all came apart. Oxford were worse than that.
By 30 minutes, the visitors were under pressure. A pull back from Luke Chambers on Danny Mills’ son, Stan, drew a dangerous set piece and a yellow card. The free kick sailed over the wall and out of play but the home side were growing a little in confidence. Moments later Charlton played themselves into trouble from a short goal kick. Oxford soon capitalised and a ball was whipped in when Chambers was beaten again, but Amari’i Bell’s extended leg lifted it away for a corner that ultimately came to nothing.
The first half finished with the Addicks having some sixty percent of possession but nothing to show for it, with play in the final third suffering a serious case of anemia. Neither keeper had been properly tested, though anxieties in the Oxford box made things interesting. This match was screaming for some changes, perhaps the introduction of Charlie Kelman and/or Ibrahim Fullah to bolster the attack.
No changes were made for either side when the second half kicked off. In fact, for the first five minutes, it was a continuation of the first. On 54 mins a bullet throw from Harry Clarke landed in the centre of the box and was nodded goal-ward by Conor Coventry, only to go narrowly wide. Oxford then moved the ball up the pitch quickly and, as the ball was swung into the box, a collision involving Kayne Ramsay gave the referee cause to award Oxford a penalty. The penalty was dispatched and Oxford were in front in exactly the manner I had feared. The home side had manufactured a penalty from minimal contact in the box.
Charlie Kelman was introduced to shake things up, with just shy of 60 minutes on the clock, replacing Kayne Ramsay. As Charlton shifted with the change in formation, Oxford almost scored a second. A mix up at the back allowed the Oxford striker in on goal and his shot beat the on-rushing Mannion but was cleared off the line, comfortably but at the absolute last second, by a retreating Lloyd Jones. At that point, the midfield was looking stretched, tired and behind the pace (more than usual!). Oxford had the bit between their teeth. In possession, they were more animated, more aggressive. Out of possession, they were determined to make things more scrappy. They were doing a job on the visitors and it was working.
On 67 minutes, Jayden Fevrier was brought on for Conor Coventry. Then on 81 minutes, Ibrahim Fullah and Joe Rankin-Costello came on for Greg Docherty and Luke Chambers.
On 89 minutes, Fullah’s high cross into the box put Oxford under pressure. Karma struck when Lloyd Jones rose up to challenge the keeper for the ball and the Oxford defender inexplicably pulled his shirt and wrestled him to the ground. The infraction was blatant and unmissable, and wholly unnecessary. The referee awarded a penalty that Charlie Kelman suitably dispatched to level it up, giving the Charlton away contingent something to celebrate. Two penalties, a goal each.
Six minutes of added time was on the cards, some of which was taken up by the penalty, so it actually became close to nine. Both sides had their half chances as the ball was cleared forward in hope from box to box. Nothing substantial though, so this one finished honours even.
A game lacking in quality certainly had tension! Charlton looked leggy throughout and were mostly “dominant” until the soft penalty went against them. When the leveller came, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to breathe a heavy sigh of relief. Allowing Oxford to win that match would have been highly frustrating. We’ve done what we’ve needed to do and can now forget this one entirely.
Oxford 1 Charlton 1
Over to you.

Must not lose. Did not lose. Oxford will be gutted.

7 points in a week with 2 away games is absolutely massive at this stage of the season. Results over performance all day long until we're mathematically safe.65

I love the smell of 1 point in the afternoon.

7 from 9 is an excellent return. If we had drawn at Middlesbrough and won today we'd be seeing how good it is. Oxford were in pretty decent form. It's all good.34

Won't live long in the memory but who cares. Clarke and Doc best of the starters. Thought the subs did well.8

Performance wasn't great but the result is all that matters now. You could tell the midfield were very tired from the other night so this was a well earned point in the end.
TC was shocking though and shouldn't be starting games. Zero effort.
Happy that Kelman scored.

I'm happy we're another step closer to the fifty point mark, and with seven games still left to play. But by god... We are capable of turning in some absolute bone idle, nuclear winter, rabidly shite performances sometimes. We just played a game against a crap team and didn't create a single chance until the 93rd minute, and we didn't even 'create' that one.21

Thought we would lose today and was expecting a dodgy, tired performance.
Thrilled to get the draw and also do so in a way that will be particularly demoralising for the Oxford team.
Hopefully this triggers a loss of form for them.
Find them a pretty dislikeable team, but can't put my finger on why17 -
Seeing how bad Oxford were in the 1st half, we should have been looking to take 3 points. A point is a good result in the end but that was fricking dire. Another point closer to safety though and that's the main thing right now.13

One of those matches where it’s hard to write anything.
1-1. Docherty was excellent both in his attacking play and usual role. Lloyd Jones is still Lloyd Jones. Thought Coventry had a tidy enough game.
You can see we need another pacey option up top. When TC is not firing we look even worse in the final 3rd.
Very much feels like avoiding a loss leaves us needing 3 more points, but you never know.

I said do not lose in the match preview and they did that , also pointed out we struggle against teams that play the same game tactics as our selves and we did. Give this squad the majority possession and they look awful as they have no creativity.5

Got away with it today.
Happy with four points this week. Oxford will be more disappointed than us today despite having a very soft penalty.0 -
Sounded like a very poor performance, so absolutely delighted to get a point. We'd all have been ecstatic with 7 points from last 3 games if been told beforehand. A big help towards safety.Imagine that's a big sucker punch for Oxford to take too.4

TC just stopping to let the ball run out without shielding only to let the Oxford player get to it was prime Charlie Kirkesque lack of effort. Funny enough though it actually led to our goal. How bizarre1

Dreadful. Nothing created from open play. Soft penalties all round, but both fouls. No idea what Brown was thinking for them with the ref (rightly) giving fouls for shirt pulls all game. We’ll take it, one step closer - please let us sign some creative players in the summer.4

A terrible advert for The Championship. I was shocked at how poor Oxford were considering their recent form, it could be down to the game's importance. We were the better side 1st half without really looking like scoring. Second half they improved until they got their penalty, even if every ref that sees it says it is a pen the defending side will feel aggrieved. We laboured but never looked dangerous, despite some good touches, luckily their striker who wants to be Zlatan decided to let us have a spot kick of our own.4

Well if nothing else hopefully that takes the wind out of Oxford’s sails a bit6

Dreadful game. Another point.Move on12

Indeed, don't think Doc even did a customary misplaced pass today?Laddick01 said:One of those matches where it’s hard to write anything.

Job done. Not pretty but got there. Big point in the context of where we are and where they are. Fatigue from Wednesday played a part in the performance. Let's put it behind us and move on.6

Absolutely take the point looking at the big picture, but a bit disappointed we didn’t go for them , to say they had won 3 in a row, they are a poor side. We were very ordinary to say the least, going forward today we were terrible.1

An absolutely appalling game of football between two shit teams. A poor advert for League One, let alone the Championship.
Happy to get a point at the end as I couldn't see where it was coming from, but that was a really tough watch.19 -
Fullah impressed me with his desire to just get early balls into the box. Could do with a bit more of that9

Big point. Means we probably don’t even need to win another game this season. Few draws will do it.
Can’t believe they have a fighting chance of staying up ….. but will take a Championship with them and Lincoln in next season if it means we lose 2 more established teams8 -
I’m gonna put that performance down to fatigue. Two tough away trips in the space of 3 days. 7/9 points taken this week. I’ll take that and move on to the next match. Forget the performance. On this occasion, it’s the result that matters.18

Twenty minutes to 15.00. Thank God the Schadenfreude is still on the menu!1

Good point in the end although I was getting Ronnie Schwartz flashbacks with the last minute pen
It’s been a very good week so well done to NJ and the team 👍5
