Sad news reported by the Southend United Ex-Players Association that our former keeper, who played 16 games for us in the 1970/71 and 71/72 seasons died on Tuesday, aged 79.
Derek, V359, played for a host of league and non-league clubs well into his 40s and even made an emergency appearance aged 50.
He had set up and ran his own successful printing business.

We’ve got Bellotti not Bonneti or similar as I recall.

Remember his long throw, used to throw beyond the half way line. The first keeper I remember doing so

RIP Derek, took over from Charlie Wright for a while from memory.
Disturbing how it effects your on mortality, really don't feel long ago
being in the Covered End at the front by the railings watching him.

I’m fairly sure the keeper with the throw was Tony Burns, same era.bolloxbolder said:Remember his long throw, used to throw beyond the half way line. The first keeper I remember doing so

RIP Derek. I recall his long throws - always fascinated me that he could hurl the ball to that far. As a teenager, I was an goalie for time to time and I always wanted to emulate his prowess in that respect.
I am surprised he did not play more games for us.0 -
