Were they not employed by an agency....still wrong though.
  • Strict liability doesn't automatically translate to" exploitation" (the unfair treatment of someone to benefit from their work).

In your imagination it does, because it fits your narrative.
Meh. I don’t think that implying that a business breaking the law by underpaying
workers is exploitative is a particularly bad narrative, but let’s see how the club responds.

“…these were historic payroll errors. We have since strengthened our processes to avoid any such repetition…we are committed to being the most sustainable community driven… blah blah blah”

    Very disappointing.

If it was an error, and the club was made aware of it, made good the underpayments voluntarily, why was the club prosecuted? It was either a vindictive prosecution to prove that HMRC are 'hard' and will get you, or the club knew exactly what they were doing and tried to avoid paying the legal minimum.

Either way, I really don't think that there is an excuse for a professional business to pay less than the minimum wage. Unless, they were trying to be clever and complicated the employment in order to get the costs as low as possible, its really not difficult.

I would expect a public apology to those employees and a public statement telling us this won't happen again.

A certain owner was given the opportunity to meet someone concerning certain financial matters and declined/did not reply to the email/message.
Not sure where that owner is now. 😉

I think the club needs to increase ticket prices to ensure we can pay the staff more.

I think this video sets out the low pay issue relatively well.

I can’t believe this was done intentionally, shows why we need a ceo, I guess?
