Home games - Kick-off towards Covered or Away end?

We've lost 5 out of 6 home games.

We like to kickoff and attack towards the away end, as a rule.

We do this irrelevant of the blinding sun impacting ourselves rather than the opposition.

We lost the toss and kicked off towards the Covered end in one game (game).

We won that game, by scoring in the 2nd half in front of the away end.

Why such rigid thinking?

    If I were captain playing away and won the toss, I would always choose to play the ‘wrong way’ for them.

    Six games is hardly a statistically significant sample!

    Historically 44% of goals are scored in the first half of matches, and 56% in the second half. The received wisdom is that teams want to be kicking towards their own fans (where there is a clear 'home' end) and more importantly home fans want to see action in front of them rather than 100 yards away. It's a tradition that I would hazard a guess applies to pretty much every ground - Holt End, Gallowagte End, Stretford End, Kop et al.

    Whether or not it makes a difference, I don't know, but I'm sure there are stats available that would support it one way or another.

    Win the toss , attack the away end first half every time.

    Our record over the last few years shooting towards the covered end second half is very good. The last few games is a much smaller sample size, and even in them we’ve been on top in the second half but just not been able to score

    Greg Docherty said on Tuesday he always tries to kick towards the CE second half 

    He believes away captains want to turn us around as they think it will help them.

    But then away teams will surely also want to be attacking their end in the second half?

    It's not like a midweek game in L1 against Burton Albion, with 250 hardcore fans in the away end. When they have 2000-3000 people in a packed JS, the away team will also have that benefit of big support in the second half if we're attacking the CE and they're attacking the JS.

    As an away team it’s much more important to start strongly though. If you can use shooting to your fans to quieten down the rest of the stadium early why wouldn’t you?

    I think it's a good discussion and not one that should be smugly shut down with personal views.

    Ban away fans, make both ends home ends & watch the goals fly in.

    We also lost the toss against Millwall and shot towards the CE first half.

    Statistically we are much worse attacking the jimmy seed stand - if you take each half as its own game this season then our record is: 

    Shooting towards Jimmy Seed: 
    3 halves won, 10D 8L

    Shooting towards CE:
    9W 8D 4L 

    We are much better shooting towards the covered end so I see no reason to change that being our second half. Second half winners was a big part of our promotion last season and strong start this season

    I hate it when we kick towards the covered end in the first half.

    Redevelop the JS and West Stand, stick the away fans in the resultant new SW corner and end of the West Upper, and turn both ends into cauldrons of noise

    I suppose in the grand scheme of things, there are bigger issues in the world.

    But I totally agree, it's an outrage.

    Yes, but today I'm so outraged at this it is a very close second as the biggest issue of the day

    My dad started supporting Charlton in 1947 and going to games in the 1950s. He always referred to kicking towards the Covered End second half as “the right way” so it looks like there’s a historic precedent / tradition here too.
