Of course it was - Roger Hunt  turned away immediately otherwise he would have followed up.

always amazes me whenever I watch it just how much slower the game was back then.

    Hope they include VAR.

No way that goal should have stood.

Clear handball by the German for their equaliser.

I've always been of the opinion that this is the biggest giveaway that the ball was over the line.

Hunt was a striker and no striker turns down an open goal, especially for their country.

If there was any doubt in his mind he'd have buried the rebound and argued it was his goal, not Hirst's.

If the game had remained all square after extra time, the game would have been decided by a coin toss.
There would not have been a replay

Great watch, forgot how good a football match it was. Except for the 'injuries' of the German goalie, the players just got on with it!. No rolling around the ground for 5 minutes, which is the curse of modern day football!. Amazing fitness, despite the lack of 'sports science'. Moore and co, still  heroes to this day for me. I was 15 at the time, and my mother made me clean the inside balcony windows in extra time, as I had said I would do it in the morning, and sat there glued to the TV set!. I spilled the 'glass cleaner' when the third goal went in!.... more moans!. What a great day, played football  with my mates in Springfield the following day most of them wore there West Ham shirts!
Good idea to get people to sponsor the game to raise funds for Alzheimer's.
  • Great match and heroes one and all. I heard that some of the players went out for a few beers together after the match. Most just went home!

@Covered End Thanks for posting this. I was 14 at the time and on a Scout camp in France, so I didn't get to watch the game back in 1966. I have never before seen the whole game. So this was a real treat.

I know that Martin Peters was described as "10 years ahead of his time" but to me it is clear that Alan Ball was (probably the only) modern-day footballer out there.

I seem to remember seeing someone on Antiques Roadshow or sinilar who had a programme/teamsheet from the replay that never was as slow printing presses meant when it looked like it might be a replay, they starting printing, then stopped when we won, meaning there was only ever a few printed.

So checked and there would have been a replay - suspect the coin toss would have been if a replay was drawn as well?

If Geoff Hurst hadn’t scored twice in extra time and the scores had stayed level, a replay would have been played the following Tuesday evening. And if the replay finished as a draw? The World Cup winners would have been decided by a lottery.

On the evening of the final, the squad attended an official banquet at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington.

Alan Ball was the best player on the pitch in that game.

He was,he ran Scnellinger into the ground, and that was not easy to do,but there were some excellent performances,Bobby Moore, just seemed to be every where,he was like a magnet to the ball. And the elegance of Bobby Charlton,he just glided past players, just a joy to watch. And as a previous poster mentioned,no diving about,no stupid hand wringing or thumping the floor after 4-5 rolls. Also a mention for Uwe Seeler, what a shift that man put in for his country.

The segment between the two periods of extra time when Sir Geoff Hurst spoke to the Alzheimer sufferer who had attended the final but had little memory of it was amazing. When the chap asked Hurst "Do you still see Bobby (Moore)?" I was almost in tears. Fabulous piece.
