I Can't Let Go - Evie Sands or The Hollies
Go Now- Bessie Banks ( the great, original, deep soul version written by Bessie's husband Larry and released here on the legendary Red Bird label. The record was championed all his life by Dave Godin who included the song on the first volume of his Deep Soul Classics cd series, or, the watered down, God awful cover by the Moody Blues, who not only ripped the soul out of it but had the audacity to try and pass it off as their own, thus depriving Bessie of what should have been deserved exposure in the UK when black American soul music was starting to gain a huge following in Britain.
Anyone who chooses the latter version, go hang your head in shame.0 -

Absolute classic, Stone, imo. Interestingly the vinyl record on the youtube clip was the re realeased one from the late 1960's on Soul City Records hwas owned by the previously mentioned Dave Godin and run from his Soul City record shop originally in Deptford High Street and later in Monmouth Street, Covent Garden.
Dave was responsible, almost single handedly, for bringing soul music to the attention to people in the UK in the early sixties. He was the man we have to thank for getting Tamla Motown off the ground here, he also later coined the phrases "Deep Soul" and "Northern Soul". I got to know him for a while in the late 60's and early 70's, he lived in Church Road in Bexleyheath the same town I grew up in. Top bloke, always had time to talk to me about music and life generally. Sadly no longer with us.0 - Sponsored links:
