When England were at war with France a french ship was shipwrecked off the coast of Hartlepool and the only survivor was the ships pet monkey which the locals though was a frenchman having never seen one before..i think there was a trial and the monkey was found guilty of being a french spy and hung, hence the term monkey hangers and why they have a monkey as a mascot0
