I heard a tip on Radio 5 the other day. To help prevent slipping over on icy pavements wear an old pair of socks on the outside of your shoes. I tried it earlier while I was clearing the path and it works a treat. Better than a broken wrist anyway.

driving wise was given a couple today as had to drive up my road which is slopey and like an ice rink, managed to get home fine and no sign of slipping although still dont like driving in it.
keep in low gears (standard advise really)
    do not accelerate quickly
everything you do, do gradually eg. if you are using accelerator do it gradually and stay in low gear, when steering gradually
try not to use your brake if you want to slow down then go down a gear
if it starts to slide ease of accellerator slowly and try to straighten up, if you are sliding stear into to come out

hope this helps as it helped me alot although i am still nervous about driving on it

An old Army mate used to say that first gear is worst gear. Try starting in second gear to stop the wheels from spinning.

wasnt told that one but will try it out, but basically go in first if you want to slow down to gain control and then once in control you can try a bit of gentle acceleration thats wat i done

Did your advisor recommend putting on the handbreak after parking? I've heard it works a treat to stop the car rolling away.

    (Sorry, couldn't resist ;) )

drink warm salty water to stop your fingers getting cold
  • Grit the roads and pavements, if there's anyone from Lewisham council on they may wish to try this.

    Drink hot lager.
When out for a pint and you need to go out for a ciggie, zap your beer in the microwave and hey presto warm hands!

First gear is worst - you want highest gear possible to prevent jerking and slipping

steering into the skid is only applicable on a rear wheel drive car skidding

just go slowly and don't do anything hasty and you'll be fine

The funniest thing I heard today involving the snow was at housing estate where the young'uns along with their parents spent today building several snowmen (up to 25/30) on their local playing field, in typical style 4 local idiots turned up in their car hooting and screaming and generally being a pest decided it would be fun to race the car around the field destroying the little'uns snowmen, with two to go the car stopped suddenly, the little darlings had built a snowman around the last standing concrete bollard surrounding the carparking area, the car is trashed and the driver under arrest : )

    Yeah stay in!
  • I did try that but when I got in from the local watering hole I had to try it out. But no it didn't work, if the snow is higher than your ground clearance you just get stuck

Spot on - always use 2nd to pull away: More power, less speed.
