Togo's football team are pulling out of the Africa Cup of Nations following a deadly gun attack on their team bus in Angola.

Two players were shot and injured in the attack in Angola's northern province of Cabinda on Friday and the coach driver was killed.

Organisers say the tournament will go ahead but Togo's players had been discussing whether they would stay.

Team captain Emmanuel Adebayor said on Friday many players wanted to go home.

The BBC's Russell Fuller in Angola says the head of the Ghanaian Football Association has confirmed to him that the Togolese team have pulled out.

The Togo squad is on its way to the airport to leave the country, he says.

Adebayor, who plays for Manchester City, told the BBC: "I think a lot of players want to leave, I don't think they want to be at this tournament any more because they have seen their death already.

"Most of the players want to go back to their family. No-one can sleep after what they have seen today."

Among the nine people injured were two players, an assistant manager, physio, goalkeeping coach and another coach.

I am absolutely stunned by the reaction of the CAF official who mentioned how the Togolese team should've travelled by air as they had told all teams not to journey by road.

This was in the first official CAF interview after the event and I thought such a comment was disgusting. Victims were still in hospital and having surgery for their wounds, I don't think it's time to discuss the rights and wrongs! Maybe they shouldn't have been travelling through what seems like a dangerous territory by road but what on earth was he hoping to gain by a seemingly "told you so" approach.

tragic that anyone should die for football.

Good on Togo for putting safety before money

Casts a real shadow over what could have been a good tourney

Still, euro 96 carried on despite the bomb attack.

It is now suggested that there are 4 dead :-(

It was confirmed on Friday night the bus driver was killed in the attack, while reports from France claim an assistant coach, a press officer and reserve team goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale have also died from their injuries.

    game got better.

    Amazing result.
  • I can't remember seeing a better opening game to a tournament. Diarra seemed very calm in his interview at the end. Some stunning goals - especially Kanoute's header - and good open football. Why Angola were all pushing on at 4-2 up in injury time, is beyond me.
  • fantastic game, just what the tournament needed it has to be said. what a fantastic comeback, great line from Diarra afterwards when he said that he'd have taken a point at 4-0!

Thinks this is what makes African football so exciting to be honest, the energy and ability of players like Drogba, Essien, Yaya and Kolo Touré, Obinna etc. mixed with a bit of the gung-ho naivity and eccentricity that the teams seem to always show.

    Fix...
  • Saw the goals, Mali scored after 79, 88, 92 and 94 minutes!!

Angola were suicidal in still attacking at 4-0 up.

Didn't watch the whole game but was quite surprised a side including Diarra (Real Madrid), Sissoko (Juventus), Keita (Barca) and Kanoute were 4-0 down in the first place.

Angola's coach was at The Valley when we played millwall. Everyone knows not to sit back too deep when you're 4-3 with minutes left.

Angola were pretty hilarious. When they got the second pen, they switched takers because they were having such a good time and wanted to share the goals out. Lucky he scored, as it turned out. As others have said, it was insane that they kept pushing after Kanoute's goal and basically only had four players in the final third then the third goal went in.

It will do to the gamblers amongst us ( i know there is a few!)

The figures on the left are the decimal odds and the money is what was matched at those odds.

Notice down the bottom, someone won 37k from a 37 quid bet.

    that's as clear as mud JT ; - )

So is 2.98 what I would have called just under 3/1? and 2.0 2/1

[cite]Posted By: Sussex_Addick[/cite]Africa's a continent, not a country. i.e. it's a very big and varied place. You wouldn't panic about a World Cup in England because some people had been shot in Bulgaria for example

That being said, it is terrible news, and part of a worrying new trend of terrorists singling out sports teams

But Europe & Africa are completely different. I understand that SA have brought in extra measures and i believe that the WC will be a safe one, but border control in Africa is not as tight as other continents. Civil war is rife in Africa and SA isnt the safest country anyway.

Adebayor was told to place t-shirts over his head when leaving the team bus, possibly as he is a high profile target. South Africa will host the best players in the world and with the whole world watching any incidents will raise the profiles of the guilty parties.

Im just saying that fridays incident will make FIFA that bit more nervous about a safe World Cup in South Africa.

Isn't it the total matched? therefore that £37 could have been made up from a few people

Decimal odds tell you what the pay out will be, if you put £1 on at evens you will have a £2 return i.e. in decimal form 2.0
