Massive cloud of ash closes all UK airports.

All UK airports - including Gatwick and Heathrow - have been closed after a massive cloud of ash from a volcano in Iceland drifted into UK airspace, but according to my Millwall work mate this is not true, he says it is due to a cleaner at Charlton cleaning out our trophy cabinet.

Surely it is possible for aircraft engines to have a filter/net over the engine to stop detritous getting in to the engines, or is that a stupid comment from a girl?

I think it would just get sucked into the engine.

I'm supposed to going on holiday on Saturday - flying to Nice from Bristol.

Have we got any 'volcanic cloud' specialists on here? Need to know if these things just blow over...;)

It literally effects everything on the plane, from engines to flight recording data. Far too dangerous to fly anywhere near. A dust sheet wont work unfortunately!

Do you reckon my flight will be delayed/cancelled?

I haven't got a clue about the workings of an airline or an airport but would imagine the flight catch up would cause problems, even if the cloud moves on.

Likely to have "blown over" by tonight according to the news. Flights should be ok for tomorrow, although don't know what happens re all the cancelled flights.

LOL - stuck in Valencia overnight by the looks of things. No official word yet on whether my flight's cancelled, but that's unsurprising - I've been ringing sleazyjet for four hours now, every hour, and been told every time that they don't have a clue if any flights will make it to the UK today.

Still - there are worse places to be stuck in... like Glasgow :o)

Cant really understand why they have cancelled flights from the continent into London, i thought the ash had only affected places up north.

I thought it was the dust from the carpenters building Millwalls trophy cabinet.

i have been working at Stansted all day and i have been told the reason is all flights out of England head north didnt say how far up i wouldnt have thought it would be much past london before heading to where they are going and that the advice from the government is that there is a significant amount in the air at 20 odd thousand feet across the whole of england and wales already that could play havoc with the in flight equipment, the thicker cloud is still heading this way,

The airport is closed no one is in there apart from staff, they also are unsure when flights will restart and have a plan to last the whole weekend if nesc

This would be a bad idea - look what happened to Syndrome's supercloak on The Incredibles.

I'm being told I won't be flying to Gatwick until at least Friday evening. I might fly to Paris tomorrow morning, however (ash cloud permitting), and get the Eurostar back. Whatever happens, I'll have a day off tomorrow :)

Every cloud has a silver lining - I live under the Heathrow flightpath, and the usual aircraft noise and TV reception interference is non existent tonight.

Got out of Heathrow for Vietnam on Wednesday, looks like I made it just in time.
