Don Thompson won an Olympic gold medal for Great Britain in the 50 kilometre walk at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
He lived in Kent and participated in various road running events such as half marathons until quite recently. I used to do the odd half marathon and despite his athletic pedigree he would always have an encouraging word for a fat pensioned off rugby player struggling to get round.
A top man both as a person and in his achievements.
