[cite]Posted By: Choice[/cite]How Odd! Charlton must have got rid of him, I doubt he would leave us and unsettle his family to do that. Obviously no other club here wanted him

It was "said" at the time Burton first signed for Charlton (initially on loan to enable him to play straightaway) that he had been going to accept the Cheltenham offer ..... but Charlton came in and offered double the Cheltenham wages?

If so, we can hazard a guess that Burton's Charlton contract was worth £5-6k per week.
That doesn't fit in with the present wage structure, so no doubt he knew he'd only be offered half of that to re-sign.

At 33 years old, he's no doubt looking for one last decent paycheck.
    Perhaps he's now got it?

    money grabbing barsteward.

No other reason for it and he certainly didn't go for footballing reasons.

I have to admit I didn't really take to him & although wew missed him last season when he was out injured he still didn't score enough goals..........just 1 from open play since xmas.

    good ridance.
  • Really peed off with Burton to be honest. Obviously didnt appreciate us.

i mean he probably hasn't got a trade to fall back on and it's his last chance to nick some proper dough out of a football contract so wtf is he supposed to do stay in england for 2-3k a week or go out there for 2 maybe 3 times the dough .. bearing in mind he'll be on the dole in a couple of years

got a family to look after but makes a mockery of the fact that ideally he wanted a move to the Midlands to be near his kids.

He's gone for one last paycheck that's all. If we were in his position (someone who has no real affinity to Charlton, especially in League One) and gets offered £££££'s I think I would consider it.

probably been told that he's joining a team in the A-League and he is looking forward to a year living outside Sydney, Melbourne or Perth. Going to be in for a shock sometime soon !!

He made a point once how he missed his kids living in the Midlands and that he tried to get home regularly or they came down and how his little daughter told him she understood that her mummy and daddy werent together anymore. said it broke his heart.

Have you seen his wife? I dont think she looks like the type to take to it out there.

a year away will obviously be a strain and affect family life but in the long term it's going to provide a better life for them all if he is earning more than he can here. A small sacrifice to pay in the short term.

Good luck to the guy. He got a better, in his eyes, offer and went.

Always worked hard for us and can't fault his attitude or application so thanks Deon.

Don't know how much he is getting or for how long but I imagine they are offering decent cash, maybe tax free, plus accommodation etc to lure English players out there. Might even end up doing some coaching under Adams.

I'm sure that like most places if you have a bit of cash it's a decent enough place to live.

Would make an interesting book or blog.

I can understand him wanting the best deal possible at his age, shame still could have given us something
  • Golfie - if you were offered a 150k one year deal in London or a 350k a year two year deal abroad knowing that you were quite likely to retire in 2 years time, what would you take?

I think many supporters forget that players are only human, with the same needs and foibles as everyone else.

If someone offered me a chance to double my wages, maybe expenses paid also ..... I'd jump at it.
    Wouldn't you?

So what's different for footballers? It's their job.

It's not quite the same - he's been earning very well for a fair few years now so probably has a fair bit saved up.

If I had the choice between staying in this country for 1 year, with my family, on the same wages, I think that would probably be my preferred option to living in Azerbaijan but doubling my money for a year.

    But each to their own

Well it not be my number one choice, but good luck to the guy.

I have no particular feelings one way of the other with Deon, he came, he tried he went.....

As others have said his first priority is his family
  • Are we really surprised that Burton has taken a better offer than ours? I liked him, but he is the epitome of the journeyman footballer. Is that 11 clubs in his career now?

Strange signing but I read beofre he had a very good offer from a team abroad. Wasn't this the team who tried getting Samuel Eto'o before he moved to Inter last summer?

That was Bunyodkor in the mighty Uzbekistan! They were going to pay him something like $20m for 3 months football! Rivaldo and Denilson play for them.

    Good Luck to him.

Proper footballers footballer was Deon. Big, Strong, tough & hard working. Had a great touch too. Would liked him too have scored a few more goals from open play but his service was pony.

I don't know why people are saying he left us for more money? As far as I'm aware we didn't actually offer him a contract did we?

Parky said just after the Swindon game, that he'd like Burton to stay and there 'could be' a contract on the table.
But he also said that he told Burton to look around and see if he could find himself a better deal.

To my mind, that clearly shows that a reduced contract offered was the major factor.
And the club weren't prepared to break their wage structure.

still seems like an odd location for a player with his track record, surely some rich arab state, US or even Australian team would have him
