Moving swiftly on from Tuesday night’s farce we saunter over to Brisbane Road for an East London Derby against Leyton Orient.
It is fair to say that we have not performed for the Sky (spit) cameras for a while now so surely we are due a performance and a result akin to our 4-2 win against Reading many moons ago. That being said, in three previous matches played on Friday 13th, Charlton have never won. Oh joy.
I think it is safe to say that Parkinson will revert back to the team (with Racon in for Semedo) that played in the victory over Bournemouth. Francis does not look ready and none of the players that played in Shropshire have done themselves any favours in terms of pushing for a starting berth. Other than the strikers.
Will we stick with Abbot-Martin partnership that scored 3 goals between them in 32 first half minutes, or do we bring back the match winner from Saturday Akpo? Another option to consider is dropping Wagstaff and playing a more conventional 4-3-3 with Martin coming in from the right. Could be a crucial decision.
This is going to be a tough one and even the most optimistic bone in my body is only saying 1-1.

I would not change the back four from Saturday and move Francis to play right wing for Waggy. Drop Sodge and play Martin behind Abbot, sounded like it worked yesterday. Racon to come in for Samedo and McCormick to play a much deeper role.0

I know akpo had a good game against Bournemouth but I think Martin just behind abbot could be a great partnership. Just hope parky don't move solly to the left to accommodate francis and which would mean jacko going into midfield0 -

Another big error by Parky last night. I just cannot understand the logic, when trying to gel 5 or 6 new players into the team, of not taking every opportunity to give as many games as possible to your first choice starting line-up. Especially this early in the season when what the players need more than anything is competitive games under their belt.
However, in doing what he did he may have stumbled onto something. When was the last time two Charlton strikers scored 3 goals between them away from home and apparently linked up well on many occasions last night. Surely these two have played themselves straight into the starting line-up on Friday. What possible reason could he have for not selecting these two to start on Friday night?0 -

We seem to be more clinical in front of goal, there were occasions when we also created good chances.
Question to anyone who went last night: Did Racon have any influence on the midfield? because he sounded a little innefective on the commentary, the midfield sounded weak and Shrewsbury seemed to have an awful lot of the ball wheras its normally us who has the ball but dont normally do much with it. Fortunately that combination at the back wont get another chance to show us why they arnt in the first team.
I would say Shrewsbury are also a better team than Orient0 -
Don't worry about the defence people. Highly doubt we'd of lost last night if Dailly and Doherty played CB for the whole game.0

The team showed on Saturday that they are still a long way off being a unit. Partnerships developing all over the pitch are crucial and to be honest I think that is still some way off. Away from home in particular a disciplined team "shape" is essential and I doubt that at present we are capable of withstanding the type of sustained pressure you can expect away from home. My heart and hope is with a win but I am sorry to say I can see us losing this one. 2 - 0 to the Orient.

No changes there then. I'll be there hope we can create some atmosphere. Read somewhere that someone was bringing 3,000 balloons (2/3 each by the looks of it atm). Can anyone confirm/deny this?0 -

It wasnt my idea, somebody asked me to try and publicise it but has decided to shelve the idea for this Friday after seeing only 600 had sold. Gonna do it again later in the season, maybe Peterboro, Notts Co, Bournemouth should be well supported matches as will be new grounds for some people.
Btw: Well done to anyone who went last night, I was gonna go but bailed out last minute. I thought we would get about 150-200 go over there but it wasnt a bad turnout considering. Was it another Colchester ground or better than that?0 -

It was a compact, neat and decent ground, Choice. Ladies' loos had running hot water (!!!) which is a plus AND I had TWO choices of white wines ! Very helpful and friendly staff too made a difference. And no gloating from the home fans ...well, no more than you'd expect after a "famous " victory by a well organised, sharp set of players.
Re Orient....I wasn't impressed with Francis last night , although as someone commented, he's not match fit ( so is it the time to risk him on Friday ?) Still unsure about Waggy too. And with no Matt Fry on the bench last night ( I think) I wonder whether he has a problem . Regarding Racon, I am usually the first to defend him but , for me, a cup match of this kind is not the best arena for his skills although others felt he had a decent game. Guess it's all about opinions.
Starting to feel nervous already for Friday's trip but with our first choice resolute defence, hoping the Abbott/Martin partnership can continue to score those much needed goals. Looked quality last night & long may it continue.0 -

Abbott and Martin for me, with Racon in for Semedo, there the only changes I'll make from Saturday. Sounds like Francis hasn't played enough football, and Solly has the position for now. Akpo to come on if we're chasing the game.

I can fully understand Parky's logic. We walked a tight rope last year with Dailly, and were duly hugely rewarded. 3 games in a week would be silly to risk Dailly. With Semedo out Mcormack is crucial for the next few league matches, whilst obviously Racon and Stav need a bit of game time. I'm surprised Doherty and Llera didn't start as no doubt they'll have to play together. Martin and Abbot was the perfect call, especially Glass Sodje shouldn't be risked. So on friday keep the same team from sat.0

Disagree. There was clear logic in what Parky did.
The players do need time to gel (let's hope that is taken into consideration when reflecting on the Orient result) but to have played the entire "first" team after most had played 30 mins with 10 men on Saturday with another league game on Friday would have been reckless.[cite]Posted By: Red_in_SE8[/cite]

Sorry but that is terrible spin. How has he "stumbled onto something". He bought both Abbott and Martin to the club very recently and then played them together at the first real opportunity. It seems to have worked as PLANNED by Parky. He may have done it on Saturday by bringing Martin off the bench if not for the sending off. you may agree or disagree but there could be a number of reasons; Sodje's match winning performance on Saturday, the poor performance of Wagstaff necessitating Martin playing wide right and the strengths and weaknesses of the Orient side to give but three.0 -

We should win it, but you never know with Charlton. One goal up and dominating with thirty minutes to go and then a brown trouser ride as they start doing the opposite of what got them ahead.
WRT to Henry's comments, above, generally agree with all of the comments, but where I'd differ is that last night's mistake was in making so many changes. Specifically I think one of the more experienced/reliable centre halves would have been better paired with Mambo. I can't believe that being alongside Llera when he's prone to "losing it" is good for a young player, particularly one who's a bit error-prone himself. I don't mind either of the players, but some centre backs just need someone that knows what they're doing to sort them out. With that combination AND a young keeper making his debut we were always going to be prone to being undone by errors. So nobody would disagree that changes needed to be made, but it might have been better to make a couple less and keep some balance.0 -
Maybe Doc in (Dailly is 36 so needs the rest) but the other side of that means that Llera would have had no game time.
As it was Doc came on for Mambo after about 60 mins which would have been a good run out for the lad. Unfortunately he'd already had a bit of a mare by then.
If Doc or one of the other first teams had been injured or suspended then people would have been criticising Parky for allowing that risk. If they had played and the match had gone to extra time then how tired would they have been v Orient?
PP was upfront that Orient was the priority and picked the Shewsbury team accordingly. We can disagree with that but it was a considered decision with logic behind it.0 -

I get that, but when it didn't come off, then it's fair to examine what's gone wrong. I think it was basically the right thing to do, but perhaps Worner-Mambo-Llera was imbalanced.
We might have paired Llera and one of the cooler heads and introduced Yado later in the game or if it went into extra time. There's always the risk of an injury, but the same goes for Abbot or Martin, so nothing is without risks. As you say Doc played for a third of the game anyway. If he'd got injured during that phase it really would have been a dark night - it only takes a second. It's not like Orient didn't also have a game, and I'm guessing they're not boasting a Man City sized squad.
What would be a concern to me is if PP has (signed) two main centre backs that he doesn't feel are capable of playing two games a week (I know this is a funny week with a Friday match), in a league when we often have two games a week. Might be another one on the way, of course...0
