My neighbour hired a skip for a kitchen and hardly used 1/4 of it. You'd be much better off with a van and taking it to the dump yourself. Much cheaper as well.

I had a lot of building work done last year, I'd thoroughly recommend Erith Skips. Great service, fair price. Whatever you do, don't go to Badger Skips. They have a terrible habit of dumping their skips on you and never turning up to pick them up. I had one of theirs outside my house for over 5 months, until finally another company agreed to take it off my hands. They're actually banned from Greenwich now, but will go anywhere. Beware.

Been looking into this a bit more.

As its only an old bathroom suite which needs dumping, a few bags of old tiles and that sort of stuff, think it would be cheaper just to hire a transit for the day and do the donkey work myself. Bexley Council take the old suites at the dump apparently, so no special recycling involved. Using a van just needs me to use the Thames Road dump rather than the one on Maidstone Road. Can dump up to half a tonne per household per year according to the rules, so cant see myself going over that!

Of course, if I've missed something glaringly obvious, please feel free to correct me :)

Using any sort of van within the Greenwich borough and visiting a dump incurs a charge apparently.
  • Youll be lucky to use a van and get rid up a tip for free

There used to be a system where you had a resident permit to do it but that stopped most dumps only let in vehicles that dont double up as works vehicles

What's wrong with the railway embankment? Bexleyheath line of course.

That suggests you can use a van but you have to be weighed and the first half a tonne goes free, unless I've completely misinterpreted that?!?!?

I've just used a HippoBag to shift a tonne of earth from the back garden, where we're levelling part off.

Have a second bag lined up to take a further tonne & a half. I've used that size before for taking an old bathroom suite and a helluva lot of other rubbish in one go. You just call them when you're done and they pick it up within 5 days.

It's £91.48 for the bag and collection on the 1.5tn bag. Not sure how much you would be paying for van hire and then whatever the council dump levy. Might work out cheaper and more convenient.

We just set ours up in the front garden and the collection lorry/crane needs access to "lean over" and hook it up.

I realise you are joking but I would happily introduce corporal punishment for fly tippers & litterers. Made my blood boil having to drive past an old 3 piece and other assorted crap that had been dumped on the cliff top overlooking the sea the other week. Absolutely no need for it.

Landfill tax is going up £8/tonne every year on top of the actual costs to councils of handling it which is why local authorities have to charge traders to access their tips.

i used hippo bag before for an old bathroom.

Think @MCS mate is cheaper than 91 quid tho. and he's a handsome young pleasant man, not that would swing it for you but he is a Spurs fan.

The only issue I've got with a skip or a Hippobag is that I dont own the land at the front of my property and I'd have to get permission from my neighbours to use the front for a few days, otherwise that would have been a good solution. The video on their website showing one of the bags lifting a car is reassuring to how strong they are!

If the bathroom suite is cast iron a scrap metal person will probably take it for nothing. Give him a drink to take the rest.

No, please don't do this as we can guess where it will end up.

Doubt it, although he'll probably stretch to a couple of gerbils.
