Just came up on Newsnow, not really new information:
    http://www.therams.co.uk/news/hunt-Varney-City-pull/article-2559578-detail/article.html

I know Parky said it's unlikely but I still think there's some mileage to this, particularly following Murray's comments yesterday about signing a winger/forward.

If Varney has been targetted as a versatile forward, with Benson to be signed as the out and out striker then the deal would make more sense - Varney usually played quite well as a winger and I seem to remember him being a pretty reliable crosser of a ball. The one thing I would say is he's very similar to Wagstaff although obviously a lot more experienced and his economy of effort may have improved since he was with us first time.

Personally I'd like a more creative, tricky wide player but I guess that may be Parky's long term plan for Martin.

    A front 4 of

    Martin Benson Abbott Reid

Would certainly give us variation and plenty of work rate too, and Waggy, Sodje and Varney would give us decent options (and pace) to bring on from the bench.

I have no facts to back it up but I'd be very surprised if Warnock whose team will be in the hunt for promotion will be after Varney who really hasn't proved himself at CCC level after 3 seasons.

Totally agree.....unless (as somebody else posted) he believes he can resurrect his career as he did with Ambrose at palarse??

Jon Stead would have been a good aquisitionin my view but I guess wages were the issue and divisions too of course, oh and not a nippy forward of course, ok I'll get my coat..

Wouldn't be surprised to see Varney at Palace as they have just sold Lee.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see Ambrose at QPR.

On sky sports this morning:- Nigel Clough saying that Varney is close to signing for another (unamed) club.

    I wonder!

Could Varney be the striker/winger Richard Murray was talking about at the EGM this week?

DERBY County say they are "very close" to agreeing a deal for striker Luke Varney to go out on a season-long loan.

Queens Park Rangers and Varney's old club, Charlton Athletic, are interested in the 27-year-old but other clubs are also keen.

"It's getting very close to a deal being done. It will probably be a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. There are just a few loose ends to tie up," said Rams boss Nigel Clough.

We have to be favorites. I can't see Warnock either wanting or needing him.

No concrete evidence that the Richard Murray's trio are Fortune, Benson and Varney but if all three sign then it's difficult to see how they fit into the team.

Fortune and Fry will be back-up to Dailly and Doherty, which could mean Llera is sold (?).

Varney could edge out Waggstaff who, IMO, has been our best player so far this season.

Benson will be a sub to start with but what does that mean for Sodje?

Ultimately we need a bigger squad and these are good problems to have but it's interesting to consider how the team will change in the coming weeks.

Would not like to see Varney pushing anyone out of our team. A brainless footballer who tries hard but cannot finish. He's fast. That's it.

Lmao fast and that's it... He's scored goals in this league and failed with us as he had pressure piled on him by prickdew

I just can't see Varney coming back to us....the drop in his salary alone will surely put him off.

As for the centre half situation, Swindon are deperate for one....perhaps we could off-load Llera to them and we can sign Fortune??

Benson doesn't excite me and I'm worried if this £200k fee is accurate. However, Parky knows how angry/frustrated we are over wasted money on the likes of JFH, McLeod, Gray, Fleetwood & Varney(!!!!)...surely he has done his homework on him?

I think Parky has said he is happy with the team but not the squad/competion for places. Murray has said we are looking to bring in a defender and everybody seems to think it is Fortune but I'm wondering if we don't want more cover at left back with uncertainty over Youga, a striker which seems to be Benson and a striker/winger, Varney does seem to be the best fit of the names I can think of.

Undertsand the point that Waggy has arguably been our best player this season, but we are only 3 games into it. Varney at this level would be more than decent, I think any reasonable person can see that.

That was about 4 seasons ago, the same time Izale McLeod was dynamite in League 2 who now cannot find a club.

He didn't fail just because of the pressure Pardew put on him. He also failed because he isn't very good at football.

Well seeing as it's a Loan rather than a Transfer I would say we are definately in the frame then.

When your main back four has the combined age of 187 it's always handy to have a few replacements on hand.

Varney would offer us something different to our current front two and that is important

Varney certainly has a decent goalscoring record at Lge 1 level and a few seasons in the Championship will have improved his all round game.

I think he'd be a very good signing, my only concern would be how he deals with coming back to a club where he (arguably) failed.
Perhaps it'll mean he has a point to prove.

Whatever the outcome it has to be said that PP's signings have been very good.

    In Parky we trust.
