Pardew told him if he was struggling he would pull him off at half time.

    Dario Gradi never did that

  • Not good enough for us in League One don't you know.

[cite]Posted By: queensland_addick[/cite]Varney is a confidence player and Holloway is very good at boosting player's confidence and getting the best out of them. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he does far better than most on here are predicting. He showed in patches (against Palace for example) that he has the talent and ability. He will also get more time in the Premiership and it may actually suit his game.
You really like the "flatter to deceive" type player queensland don't you?! First Lisbie, now Varney!

Just because they flatter to deceive for Charlton doesn't mean they are bad players. As Lisbie, Ambrose and now Varney are proving. Too many Charlton fans like to "jump on the bandwagon" when it comes to rubbishing some of our players.

Alan Hansen made a point about Theo Walcott last week when he said that when Walcott has time to think about a finish he can struggle, however when he has to be instinctive, his finishing is better. Imho Varney can be similar, for example the Burnley miss when he went round the keeper and has 1 man on the line to beat, Varney had all day to weigh it up yet yesterday his goal was more instinctive as were some of his CAFC goals (Leicester, Sheff Wed home goals for example). Not saying Varney is in the same league ability wise as Walcott but they are both confidence players who will benefit from regular football and a manager who knows how to get the best out of players (not Pardew).

I actually think Varney may do ok at Blackpool even in the Premiership, Holloway is the type of manager who will get the best out of players like Varney and at Bloomfield Road, Varney should get a chance to play most weeks and the fans and management will appreciate his work rate. Ability wise he is perhaps not Premier class but nor are most of Blackpool players yet he will work his socks off, give defences a run around and maybe get a few goals along the way.

    Regardless, wish Varney well.

It's easy to forget how far Blackpool have come in a short period of time given that they were in the 4th Division as recently as 2001, it's also easy for people to underestimate their potential to stay up and it's easy to think of Ian Holloway as a bit of a Swedish Chef style football manager!
After what he has done and on the budget he has done it with and what he has got out of a solid group of journeymen pro's I am prepared to give him the benefit of doubt when it comes to most signings but I have to say I was a bit miffed about this one- a player struggling to get into a very average Derby side who admittedly is not Nigel Clough's favourite player- suddenly getting the chance to join Blackpool in the Premier League when he must have thought the future lay in the lower reaches of the Championship or League 1.
Who can blame Varney for grasping this chance with both hands though. The budget must be very thin at Bloomfield Road but I really believe that Holloway can get those guys to perform way above themselves and Blackpool still possess- in my view enough about them to make a fist of things in the Premier League- they will struggle undoubtedly, but they could suprise people. If Holloway keeps the 'pool up he deserves the manager of the year trophy and the tangerines will probably be most football fans' 2nd team as they are keeping alive the idea that you don't have to be an uber loaded club to get there and play a bit. Given that they were in League 1 as recently as 2007 they are a glowing example of what can be achieved with dedication and hard work- just as Charlton were in the Curb's era.
I think that Luke Varney had a good game against Fulham and caused them quite a few problems, who knows- he may just find the time and space he may be afforded in the Premier League more to his liking, he may even end up being a key element in Blackpools' survival and that really is Roy of the Rovers stuff!

Confirmed today that Derby wouldn't play him because it would have triggered a further payment to Charlton.

Hope we got a sell on clause and Blackpool sign him for squillions then

How many ex-Charlton are there in the premiership? A whole team?

Bent, Varney, Carlton Cole, Young, Spector, Bowyer, Parker, Carson. There must be others - is Hreiddersson still with someone? Add a couple of our ex-players now in the Championship and it would be quite a tasty unit.

I put an ex Charlton team on the Premier League fantasy football site. You have to pick 15 players for that and I'm sure there were a few I left out as there wasn't room.

Decent team but possibly bottom in every league I entered!

spurs mate they signed him over giggsy
  • Michael Turner too..
  • Varney always looked a good player for us. It was just his finishing that let him down. The number of good chances he blazed high over the bar amazed me. The rest of his play was spot on and a different class to some of the strikers we've had over the past season and a half.
  • Varney is better than Rooney!!

  • Anyone who starts rumours of signings that prove to be wrong should be banned for a year, come on admin, sort it out.

"Varney for England!" .......he gets capped and in the next window signs for Aston Vanilla for £5 mill.

Blackpool lose their then leading goalscorer. Derby make an unexpected windfall.
And even plucky little Charlton get a 20% sell-on clause payment.

    I'm dreaming of course!
