Now I am not 100% sure why we ever cut the Fans Director at Charlton however it was my understanding (like everything appears to be at the club) that it was for financial reasons, and now that our debts don't appear to be such a looming problem now than they were last week I was thinking that while we have more serious things to address - our performance on the field, a new manager - the reinstatement of an elected fans director would be a great thing for the new board to do, especially as they are new to the club (in Jimenez & Slaters case) and it'll show that, although Charlton is no longer a PLC they are still going to take the fans views into account.

Just a thought, like to know if everyone else thinks it's a good idea (and whether the fans director worked in the first place)?

I wondered the same thing. Others on here will know more about it than me, but I think it would be a great way for the new owners to show their (good) intentions.

The fans director position came from the VIP scheme and ran it's ten year ( i think ) course.

There were all sorts of legal reasons given at about the time the Fans Forum was formed, as to why they discontinued the fans director idea. Im not sure that either format will ever work effectively but there is no harm in people submitting ideas. However, for antything to work well, the club have to be the people who want it.....without their backing and willingness to take what information is gathered on board, then its a waste of time and effort. The role(s) have to work both ways....as a voice from the club to the supporters and just as importantly, a voice from the supporters to the club. A very difficult task.
  • As an idea it was ahead of its time and worked. However that was then.

It could be argued that with Murray and Varney on the board, do we need a Supporters' Director?
  • Too late now, much harder to reinstate than retain. IMHO we should have fought harder to keep it and not let the board talk us into giving it up without a fight.

They made a decision, they didnt talk us out of it.
  • I didn't say we were talked to about the decision l said we were talked out of fighting for it. Nobody can honestly say we fought decision if even if we couldn't have changed anything. In my opinion we should have and not taken it lying down.

I think there is more chance of parkie coming back than a fans director. The new owners are interested in success for the club and making money, they are not going to be interested in fans views. Lets see what happens to ticket prices over the next five years, promotion will be paid for through the turnstiles and if we get to the Premiership we'll be taking out a mortgage for ST's.

i think whoever puts themselves forward needs to be 'a bit tasty' and know how to handle himself in strip clubs and lap dancing bars which is where i believe the monthly board meetings are to be held. Dennis will do the small man bit in goodfellas to test you out ensure you aint gonna squeal to the fans.

Those two ambitions may well be mutually exclusive, but it's a massive assumption anyway. Most successful business do like to have an eye on their customers' opinions

Being a director carries a lot of responsibilities.

The financial position of the club at the time could have created serious problems for a fan on the board.

Non-exec directors get around this by the company carrying liability insurance - as indeed it may well do for its board, so it's a problem but not insurmountable and it was one that existed when the post was created. Let's face it, it more than suited everyone for a fan not to be sitting on the board during the years of turmoil, particularly given that a new person was due in who might have been questioning and challenging at a time that the board didn't want that kind of input
