No, not a tip for next Charlton manager.

Don't know if this has been mentioned on CL before but whenever West Ham are on TV (like now - BBC 2) a fella sitting near the Hammers dugout is either the double of King Carl, or the man himself. Has he got a coaching/behinds the scenes role at Upton Park or is he a season ticket holder?

Not the best job considering the trouble he had controlling passes.

That's strange coz my mate works at Barclays in Canary wharf and had Richard Rufus on work experience there a couple of years back - seriously. Maybe on packing in the football they took it literally when told that's it lads, you might as well have a Barclays as look for a decent job.

when i interviewed carl for charltonlive before crimbo he said he does extra work on eastenders quite alot has a mate who works there, has done a few films too. i think he does some security work but his main job now is as a 'fixer' for foreign tv, mainly at west ham or other london clubs, when say one of the foreign channels wants to interview a player or a manager if the foreign host appraoached them 9 times out of 10 they would get ignored or bumped down the list, but Carl as an ex pro has some credabilty to approach the players and managers and arrange the interviews, you can often see him behind the dugout at upton park. he is a top bloke and was my idol as a child i loved the guy and was amazing to meet, i know some find him a figure of fun but he really is a top bloke and i will never forget meeting him.

  • Thanks for clearing that up adam. I spent ages rewinding last nights episode to get a better picture. He was my idol in the 90's as well so was very shocked to see him on there last night

I've met him a couple of times. Absolute top geezer. Funny as f*** and takes a wind-up well - first time I saw him was with a few mates just after he'd stopped playing for Wimbledon - was at Wimbledon dogs at some function or other, and my mate just started blinking at him over and over again while he was talking to him (anyone who's been 'fortunate' enouhg to see our 95/96 season video will know what I'm on about) - he laughed and told my mate to stop taking the piss out of him :o). Really nice bloke.

Leroy, I've got every end of season video since 94/95 but haven't seen that for probably 6 years plus. I've got memories of him standing in front of the main building at the training ground having an interview??? please elaborate on the winking...

Blinking, not winking. Sure it was 95/96 - he was being interviewed, and spent the entire interview blinking about once a second. Never did find out why - but it cracked us up when we watched the video.

yeh sorry i meant blinking. yeh i recall that. those old videos used to have some cracking comedy moments in, off the top of my head:

    - garry nelson starting an interview after Watford in 94/95 answering a question with "well errr - ttssssssss" and spitting
    - huddersfield away 2-2 draw in 95/96, robson scored a pen equaliser in the snow in front of our fans, and somebody surged towards him from the crowd to celebrate and slipped hard on his arse in the process, almost slide tackling robbo
    - richard rufus end of 94/95 having one player of the season, interview was quite amusing saying how great it had been having stuart balmer there to tell him "what to do, what to not to do"
    - eddie youds at the end of the play off final procession explaining to john fuller that "people are saying we are gonna be like barnsley, but we're not barnsley, we're charlton"

    Totally agree.

One of my CAFC highlights was his gaol at Southend, dancing around in the pen area then scoring a great goal!

That was after Man City away in 1990 when we beat them 2-1 and looked like we might pull off another great escape....not to be of course!

Nah, sure it was away to Wolves. We got beat (1-0?) but he was brilliant and pulled off some top saves.

We could do with a young Carlo in the team now. He would hold the ball up and lay it off great and we would play like a team. He would also win most of our defensive corners as well. Sure he would be kinda slow in the 6 yard box but I reckon he would get at least 10 goals in tier 3.
Glad to hear he is a top geezer.

Must have said it more than once then!

I knew a player at the club whilst Bolder was there and Big Bob was apparently quite partial to an Ale or twenty post match!
