I just met Phil. I remember him back in the Sixties and Seventies playing for Palace, Orient and Norwich.

Lives a few miles away from me and I may be buying his house, which was why I met him.

Really decent bloke. Naturally we got chatting about football. He still does some hospitality work for Norwich. He's mates with Paul Went once of our manor.

In the Palace team he played along side John Jackson, Steve Kember, Mark Lazarus, and Budgie Byrne.

Left Palace for Orient in early 70's and then went to Norwich under John Bond. Packed in due to dodgy knees. Ran a local pub for many years.

Thought you were about to suggest him as the new Palace manager ;-)

I remember him. They had a footballers athletics tournament c 1970 (London clubs only I think) and he won the long jump.

He might knock a grand or two off if you remind him of that :-)

Thanks Len, any inside knowledge is useful in a negotiation!

On the basis that all Charlton Managers this season have to have Phil as their first name? :-)

Didn't we try to sign him when Hales went at the same time as Mcauley and Tydeman ?

Yes he owned the pub in the village to where I am hoping to move. He doesn't own it now but he does own the Licence to Sell Beers, Wines and Spirts sign with his name on which used to sit above the door of the pub and now resides above his house front door.

Yes Paul was Mark Lazarus' son.

How's life with you CA. Did you get everything mended etc after the storm last year?

He scored in the FA Cup for Leyton Orient against a big side, I think. Was it a quarter final? I seem to remember that they lost 5-2 at home to Chelsea to get knocked out, but Hoadley scored the winner in the previous round against a decent side.

That was in 1970 wasn't it? Chelsea won the cup against Leeds after a replay.

Scored a 25-yarder for Orient v Chelsea in the FA Cup at Brisbane Road, when 2nd Division Orient came back from 2-0 to win 3-2 (sorry, thats Championship Orient to the younger lifers). It may have been the 3rd Round, the season after Chelsea had won the cup in 1970. I thinks its on You Tube.

Remember Phil fondly, I think he was the youngest player to start a game for us at one time. He didn't stay too long, but at one time big things were expected from him, left for Orient as did a lot of Palace players at the time.

Hope it all goes well for you, and if you do move in, don't change the red and blue wallpaper.

Paul Lazarus is son of Lew Lazarus and nephew of Mark Lazarus.

The thing is Budgie, his kids support The Arse and Man Ure, so I won't need to change the decor!

He specifically mentioned your idol though.

According to the wiki link above, he played more games for you in Div 1 than when I was watching Charlton V Palace in the late 60's. (Div 1 = Premier League for all of our younger Lifers)

Must say he came over as a decent bloke with a long-suffering footballers wife who was used to the talk turning to the game!

Thanks Lewis for clearing that up, I always thought he was Mark's lad. Oh well I like him more now then knowing that he was not the son of a Stripey Nigel :-)
