Posh Add Basey To Squad
Posted on: Fri 21 Jan 2011

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has boosted his selection options with the signing of former Charlton Athetlic defender Grant Basey.

The 22-year-old joins on a short-term contract until the end of the campaign after a successful trial at London Road.

Basey, who made 50 appearances for Charlton in a five-year spell at the Valley, spent a short stint with Barnet, which concluded at the turn of the year following a change in management at Underhill.

Boss Ferguson commented: 'Grant has come in and done very well with us. Mark Robson has known him since he was at Charlton Athletic in the youth team.

'He had a bad injury at Charlton, but has been playing games at Barnet and he has done well since he joined us on trial, so we have taken him until the end of the season.

'He is a left-back and I am delighted to have two players who are natural in that position, but he can also play as a left-sided centre back or one further forward. He is someone that is very comfortable on the ball.'

Grant will wear the numbe 27 shirt at London Road.

Will be interesting to see how this works out for him.

I heard that he was offered a 18 month deal at Barnet, but wanted to think about it. Could be a good decision now.

Probably had something else lined up - London Road it seems
  • Hope he plays against us at the Valley. Wagstaff will skin him all day long.

JUST LIKE HE DID AGAINST BARNET IN THE CUP, I DON/T THINK SO
  • I wish him well but Grant Basey is hardly the answer to our defensive problems and neither will he be to Peterboroughs IMO.

He's not good enough for us - that's all that matters

    I beg to differ actually.

Before his injury he was coming good. For his age he reads the game well and he has a very tidy left peg.

I wish him all the best still think he could have done a job for us at centre back

Wish him all the best, was undecided whether he would make it at Charlton in either LB or CB as he never seemed to have long enough in the side. However judging by the Barnet games against us, he could turn out to be a very decent CB for this level.

well if West Ham call Fry back on 5th Feb we could have done with Grant in our squad.

  • Was no good as a left-back. Anybody who doubts that should have been at the 4-4 Millwall game when 3 of their 4 goals came through his channel.

Might have been a useful centre-half if he had been given a decent run there but we'll never know unless he gets a few games their for Posh.

Thought he was alright, very consistent and definitely good back up. Didn't seem capable of putting in an eyecatching man of the match performance but also didn't look like he had a Llera/Francis disaster performance in him. Perhaps not good enough for our first team, but certainly better than Barnet.

Yes, he was targeted by Millwall in the 4-4.
The mistake he made for their final goal was quite shocking and tbh I haven't really forgiven him yet - it's only been just over a year after all.
Better suited to centre-half if he had pace alongside him.

One bad game doesn't make his a crap full back

Totally agree. Think Powell would have got the best out of him if he was still here. Cultured player, which more than made up for his alleged lack of pace (a factor that was always overstated, anyway - I'd back him over 100 metres against Dailly, Fortune or Doherty).

I'm not sure I would back him over 100 metres and I certainly wouldn't back him over that distance with Fry who was his replacement.

I do agree he was a skilled player who was better suited as a centre back or defensive midfielder. On another thread I said how impressed I was with him playing at Centre Back for Barnet against Accrington.

I agree with Kinveachyaddick in that he was limited at Left Back , you may remember that Parky actually preferred the out of position Chris Solly against Walsall away . If Youga had stayed fit we would have gone up last season.

    Mark Robson's influence, no doubt.

Good move for The Count ....... and time enough to make an impression.

    no
  • Richard j.if you are going make these sort of comments i suggest you get your facts right,Grant was ill with a virus for the Walsall game and only travelled up on the day to sit on the bench as parky was short on numbers, also on the youga comment,in the 12 games Grant started last season only 1 defeat with 6 assists.who was the left back in the defeats at colchester, carlisle, northwich.also can/t remember many assists from the great man.

Wharton I know from your other comments Grant seems to be some sort of mate of yours and if you have read what I have said about him on other threads and indeed what I said above I only wish him well in his career, only like others on here I believe he is to slow to be effective at Left Back and is better deployed elsewhere in the team. As well as Youga I felt Borrowdale and Jackson gave us better protection at Left Back than Grant did last season.

I even made a point of posting how well he played at CB for Barnet when I saw them play Accrington as well as against us in the Cup . One of the things that interested me was that the Bees played the Right Back Joe Devera at Left Back and that Grant seemed better suited to duties in the heart of defence because he reads the game so well .

I didn't realise he had a virus going to Walsall and thought it was strange he was dropped in place of Solly and as you say he was on the bench that night. I thought he had been dropped.

  • with players like basey appearing in our side we were on the road to nowhere , not good enough to be a regular in this league, there are still some left who will hinder our progress but hopefully chris powell can identify these week links and jog em on

scored a cracking og for barnet the other week
  • Darren Ferguson seems to regard Grant as a ''natural'' left-back.

That's the Darren Ferguson whose teams "ship" goals for fun.

I really don't understand this Basey bashing. He's better than a lot of you seem to give him credit for and if we'd had a manager with an once of sense Grant could have nailed down a place in midfield.
  • Basey's biggest problem was his size to broad to be a left back always looked heavy but not fat, to me he seemed like he was running in sand.

I don't think any manager or fan actually knows his best position

Other than warton or basey himself.

I don't think we are a poorer team for him leaving but for some reason I wouldn't have minded him staying and getting a decent run in the team and see where he can play. I don't think fullback is his place but we will see,

Good luck grant I hope it works out well
