FORMER Charlton keeper Dean Kiely and West Ham coach Alex Dyer have emerged as candidates to join Chris Powell’s backroom team at Charlton.

The South London Press also understands that Addicks favourite Steve Brown and Kevin Keen, first-team coach with the Hammers, are also in contention.

Powell is expected to nail down his coaching staff this week and former caretaker boss Keith Peacock and Damian Matthew are likely to stay on in some capacity.

    browny browny browny
  • Seriously Kiely or Brown would be to much for me to take.
    Talk about the dream team.
God I wish it was one of them (or both) That with the news of BWP this evening as well I am in 7th Charlton Heaven for the second week in a row.
  • if browny gets sent to the stands can we all throw our catologues on the pitch again?

Actually, all four of them are decent. Obviously Deano and Browny are legends.

I think probably Dyer and Keen are the most qualified although Browny is working at Brighton I believe. The fantasy would be Deano coming back in some capacity.
  • Not sure about the CAFC legends dream team. I think I would prefer to see someone who has not previously been involved with Charlton.

According to the Mail this morning, we are about to confirm Alex Dyer as the new Assistant manager and my money is on Damian Matthew to complete the team. We had to wait a long time for this, but I suspect it's going to be worth the wait, COYR !

Powell's pretty much confirmed Matthew will be involved, seems he'll be first team coach.

  • Needs to be an older head with experience in my opinion so no to Brown and Deano.

Brown seems to spend half the time slagging the club off from what I can see anyway.

Why though? As long as they're good at their jobs.

I agree with that about Brown, he has never got anything nice to say about us yet hes always praised as "Brown - Charlton Legend"
I'd take Keen or Deano but for an older wiser head then look no further then Ray Wilkins for me if we could get him to come.

Is this an either or could more than one of these gentlemen appear .

Having just got Ben Roberts unless Deano is number two I cannot see him returning . If he does then he could alternate as our third goalkeeper.

I suspect Kevin Keen would only move over for a number two job , as for Brown and Dyer I could see scenarios where they would join in different capacities .

If as is expected Matthew becomes First Team Coach then might one of these two come in to run the Academy ?

How about John Robinson to run the Academy? He has been involved in youth development since retiring and would know that half the battle to developing young players is giving them the right attitude. A better option than Brown i think.

[cite]Posted By: Granpa[/cite]... we are about to confirm Alex Dyer as the new Assistant manager ...

13 goals in 78 appearances for Charlton as a defender ... not bad.

And 63 goals in 469 career appearances all in defence.

He was a guest at City Addicks a few years back and had plenty of praise for Charlton... maybe not a lot for curbs man management skills.

He used to commentate on Charlton games a lot a couple seasons back when we were in Championship, thats when I first started to notice his negative comments towards us. I doubt much as changed since then.

That's what I seem to remember, though I was very young when he played for us!

Not sure where this Alex Dyer defender thing has come from, but I've read it several places. Unless my memory is seriously deceiving me Dyer played left wing and/or up front for us. He might have filled in at left back from time to time but defence was never his preferred position.

In all fairness, a couple of seasons back when we were in the Championship was around the time that a lot of negative things started to happen to us. Difficult to find anything postive to say when we're getting thrashed at home by Barnsley and Sheffield United.

Don't really know about the coaching credentials of any of these 4 - Deano always talks a lot of sense on the box, strikes me as someone who could dish out a bollocking when necessary as well.

What I've heard of Browns comments seem to be more in frustration at some of the inept performances he was witnessing from us, rather than disliking us.

You hardly be nice as pie when you see the team you love, & helped get to a fantastic position, come down as far as we have, & play as badly as we have done, during chunks of this year.

He was a passionate player & seems to like passionate performances. I'm sure we've all questioned whether we've been getting those on a consistent basis from recent squads, & is only venting publicly, what we would've liked to have said/done at the time ourselves.

Maybe he had some problems with Parkinson at Reading, when they were there together, & doesn't like him too much. He was impressed with the performance at the Swindon away game though!

    Taken from tomorrows Daily Mail:

West Ham are fighting to keep hold of reserve team manager Alex Dyer, who is wanted by Charlton.
New Addicks boss Chris Powell wants Dyer to be his No2 and the south London club want to discuss a compensation package with the Hammers to land the coach.
The 45-year-old former defender is highly-rated at Upton Park and the Barclays Premier League side want him to stay, but will ultimately let the coach decide.

Former Charlton goalkeeper Dean Kiely could also join Powell’s coaching staff.
  • Surely if we can afford to pay compensation for backroom staff from a PL club we must be loaded?
