I think his hiatus in Test cricket was longer than that. He was brought back towards the end of his career to tour India when John Emburey was not selected for some reason and when England needed a second spinner to play alongside Phil Edmonds.0 -
Emburey was just coming to the end of his 3-year ban for touring South Africa with Gooch's rebels.
That Indian tour was 84/85 and we lost the first test but came back to win the series, a remarkable achievment over there.
Tim Robinson, Grahame Fowler and Mike Gatting scored heavily.
The next summer we walloped the Aussies with Gooch back he and Gower scored loads of runs. Botham bowled genuially fast and samshed 6's in super cameos.
That series seems to forgotten by most. It was a wonderful summer 1985......0 -
