Was speaking to my friend at the game yesterday about what Powell said when he went to the Players Dinner. He said Powell is looking to buy a whole new defence and that is all what was mentioned, wether that includes a goal keeper who knows. But least Powell is seeing that if you have a defence what doesn't leak goals in then your not going to lose games theoretically. Well let's see who he buys over the Summer anyway!

Then he has the right idea.  League tables and statistics don't lie and it's there for all to see, a new defence is needed.

Got to agree. It says a lot that Llera has probably been our best centre back this season, despite only playing about 10 games.

We obviously will need some new strikers and midfielders but if we want to challenge we can't have people like Francis at right back letting people whip crosses in!

I wonder if CP has considered using Semedo in defence if and when he re signs for us. I personally think he could be perfect at the back after all that is the position he played at when Pardew signed him.
  • Didnt Saddam Hussein use that line to get a stay of execution?

Semedo was originally a centre back in Portugal. He is not great in the air and in League One and English football as a centre back you have to be. If only you could blend the best qualities of Llera with the best qualities of Semedo, you would have a great centre back.

If he wants an entirely new defence than that is fine with me! Far, far too many goals conceded this season and a lot of them would have been entirely avoidable through disciplined defending.

Neither Big Mig nor Youga will be here next season, CAFCsayer....

    Think again !

Heard from a fella on the bus (so it must be true!) that Docherty has been paid up and told to go.

Not so sure about Semedo at centre back. I think one of the reasons he was never played at CB is because he does tend to switch off and make silly challenges. His best attribute is his work ethic which is made the most of in midfield. At the back he'd probably be a bit of a David Luiz, having good games but also costing points through daft mistakes, but nowhere near as good. And without the brilliant hair

Saw Big Mig after the game on Sat, and he confirmed that was probably his last match for us.  Was disappointed he didn't manage to score.

Big Mig since coming back into the team has been solid, didn't seem the same Llera who looked like costing us a goal at any moment like he did last season.

Will be disappointed to see Llera leave. I think in better times and in different circumstances to the circus that Big Mig joined I think he might have gone on to become a bit of a Charlton legend.

Me too he was the only centre back who could pass a ball to a team mate, made the odd mistake but thats what Dailly was there for to clear up after him. Did anyone ever tell Docherty we play in red most of the time?

Yeah Mig said he'd be leaving and I'm a bit sad to see him go but our defence has been a massive problem and IT needs a complete overhaul, with Solly being the only face to survive in the first XI.

@cfgs haha gimme Andy Reid, he was the best player he signed along with Diawara. I just don't want likely lads or prem youngsters, we've seen all that before.

we could do with some 25-28 year olds that have a point to prove.  So they are not learning the game and still have the desire to fight to get to the top

No shit Sherlock. The current defence was the toxic legacy that was left to CP by Parky and the previous regime. No pace at the centre of it caused all manner of problems, not least the inability for the full backs to bomb on, and the need for the likes of Semedo to be camped deep in front of the back four.

Powell tried to get Semedo to play higher up the pitch - to many peoples amazement because most of us thought he needed a passport to cross the half way line! Much of the work done under Powell this season - after his first five games when the wheel came off, has been working on these issues. Thats why I have little truck with those who are too critical of what has happened since Parky went.

The whole squad needs a makeover - not just the sticking plasters that Parky applied. It wasn't entirely his fault however he spent what little resources available to him creating a central defence which just wasn't fit for purpose. One out of Dailly, Lera, Doc or Fortune would have just about been enough.

Just checked and Brighton paid a rumoured £250k, gave him a 3 year contract and made him captain before the season started. Why would they release him?
