Ruptured/Herniated Disc.

Has anyone here ever had one of these? I've just been diagnosed with one and i was just wondering if anyone had one that has gone down the surgical route, and if so what was your recovery time?

    As in a slipped disc do you mean?

    okay.  Well cant help you then.  I had surgery on a slipped disc but we are talking when i was 11 years old and i think the surgery has improved vastly since those days...

    Not being funny but the person who gave you the diagnosis was most likely better placed to give an opinion than anyone on here.

    Surgery and recovery time will be so dependent on your age and general health.

    There's a thing on the internet called Google...just put your diagnosis into that and you'll get all the advice/help/shocking statistics you need!

    I knew some joker would chip in.

    Anyway Henry - the person who diagnose you may well give you a general idea but can be handy to speak to someone who has actually been through it.

    Friend had operation to trim the disc and hasnt personally seen much benefit. Recovery time was about 3 weeks, plus extensive physio etc

    My mrs has just decided not to have a similar op (nerve root decompression) as she was advised by specialist that at her age (30) she could manage it with decent exercise and monitoring. The op would give her a short term benefit, in terms of stopping the sciatica but it is highly likely it will re-emerge.

    Swings and roundabouts really, see what the docs say, but if you are having regular large flare ups with sciatica, its probably best to get it done.

    yea same thing happened to my aunt with sciatica, she had the injection for it but it flared up again

    Sorry - was a bit sarcastic...but I've had my share of medical diagnoses that I've not been too clear on and have found lots of forums/health service providers etc. on the web that can provide everything you need to know.  I would of thought - without raising it on a (predominantly) football forum where the response is likely to be a bit more limited.

    Mate i have had ruptured and prolapsed disc's 4 of them at the base of my spine, i had to have all the discs skimmed and fused, it hurt like buggery but once the recovery period was over i ahve been pain free and lead a normal unhealthy life

     

    get it fixed well worth it

    a fair bit mate tbh, but only for a couple of weeks, i shouldve been off 12 weeks from work but i was back after 3 and on full duties after 4, not even a twinge now best thing i ever done having the op

    Had similar to NLA with same positive results but then ignored surgeons advice on taking things easy for a while and ended up back in pain.
    My advice is get info from internet, but don't believe all you read, then go back to the medics with well frames questions and find out the alternatives and don't be afraid ton ask for a second opinion if you're not sure.
