Anyone know of any "benchmark" rates of suggested minimum cover that someone can apply without having to go around and tot everything up.

i.e. 2 bed house in SE9 = £x, 3 bed house = £x, 4 bed house = £x

I know the value of contents will vary from house to house, but are there any average figures available anywhere?

I would suggest looking for cover the provides unlimited cover. This will ensure that you are never unsderinsured. Also look on the defaqto website, they are independent and rate insurances on a 1 to 5 star basis.

Just be careful not to be underinsured as in the event of a claim you won't get the full value of your loss. For example, if you insurefor £20k but you actually have £40k of gear, insurers would only pay 50% of a claim, as you've effectively only insured 50% of your stuff.

Unless you're particularly minted and have hoards of valuables in every
room, most 'standard' policies will give you far more cover than you
really need though so don't worry too much.

Get all your receipts together for everything you've purchased. Add them up. Insure for that amount.

Put them all in a box (ideally a safe) near the door. In the event of fire grab the box because they'll be the most important thing worth saving amongst all your possessions.
