Paul Hayes - Number 9 Pressure?

They say that the No.9 is a privileged number (Newcastle, Liverpool etc) and if we go by the recent bunch who've worn it since Jason Euell, Hayes has a lot to do to impress.

Those 9's since Euell: Zheng Zhi, Marcus Bent, Andy Gray, Leon McKenzie, Pawel Abbot and Frank Nouble. Apart from Zheng, they didn't exactly set the world alight did they?

No the opposite, they were all absolute pony. But that doesn't mean Hayes will be (although I wasnt bowled over by his contribution on Saturday at the toolbox).

To be honest, I can't really remember Zheng setting the world alight either.   All he's got to do, is do better than the people on that list - not much pressure at all really.

That list kind of says it all about our recent decline, doesn't it?

I am assuming that is a wind up, it is ot time that Big Bent needed.

Let's not talk about pressure, let's talk about opportunity. Go for it Paul.

As Kap says, surely a wind-up ... M Bent didn't give a toss about anything

Mucus Bent seemed to only ever score in a hotel room.

looks like the number 9 shirt could be as much a curse as it is an honour

ZZ might have been given the number 9 shirt, but he was always a midfielder and never used as a centre forward.
    So 9 in number only.

NEVER forget the face, you fool.  Sometimes, giving directions is not enough, you have to take them there. ;)

True Oggy, should've mentioned that in my OP. The season after they gave him number 5 (worn by Andy Reid in 06/07), which for me is traditionally a centre half's number. Strange decisions are made sometimes!

the thing is FANS, give the man a little time to settle in, he's not Messi so don't expect miracles for at least a month, try to lay off the boos the first time he misplaces a pass and give him a round of applause if he attempts the audacious and it doesn't quite come off and, of course, give him a huge round of applause and a big cheer when his audaciousness does pay off and when he scores or creates a  g  o  a  llllllllll

Agree too, Lincs ........ unfortunately there is an element amongst our fans who give the impression of not having the intelligence to understand.

let's hope that the unintelligent don't have the wit to raise a boo when a cheer will do

I thought paul hayes complimented BWP very well today

  • Think Hayes played very well today, good hold up play and first touch. Also got in some good positions in the box and really should have hit the target in the second half.

Was surprised with his fitness and the amount of closing down he did, think he will divide opinions but I have  feeling he will become an unsung hero.

  • Very mobile and once the team gain cohesion and learn each others strengths I think Hayes will create a lot of chances for others.

Surely if you go by those that have worn it since Euell, it means that he doesn't have to do very much to impress.

Thinks Hayes is a great player, much more mobile than players like Abbott!

Did really well today, adding work-rate to his obvious good touch. Formed a great link between midfield & BWP. He was my biggest concern from pre-season but really put in a good shift today. Well done mate.

Thought he had a good game, never going to be prolific but with BWP and all our midfield chipping in left right and centre we'll be ok.

Hayes has a great touch and good vision but does'nt add much in the way of height and power for BWP.

No worries that Hayes is a good player (ie much better than Abbot et al) but is he the right partner for BWP??

  • grumpy - yes.
