I noticed that until Euell (Jamaican international) came on yesterday against Scunny, we had 11 English players on the field. When was the last time we saw that? In the modern game that doesn't really happen. In the lower leagues you do tend to get more English players than foreign but you still get the odd French player or African player.

I know that Rhoys Wiggins has represented Wales at youth level and Rob Elliot has represented Ireland at youth level but they're still English players until they get a senior cap.

  • Well that's like saying anyone who doesn't play for their full national team is English. Jason euell is English but plays for Jamaica and if wiggins is Welsh then he is Welsh?

Wiggins was born in England and he has grown up in England. He qualifies for Wales through a relative (I think on his mums side). I am just saying that when was the last time a CAFC starting XI were all English? It's definitely not recently.
  • Tuesday night they were all English and
pretty sure the other two games they were as well :-)

According to Wiki, of the 32 players we have that have squad numbers, only 8 of them aren't English.

    Evina - Cameroon
    Doherty - Ireland
    Wiggins - Wales
    Pritchard - Zimbabwe
    Alonso - Spain
    Bover - Spain
    Elliot - Ireland
    Euell - Jamaica

    Interesting topic.

In the Premier League, there's a flood of foreign players but Tottenham have a fairly decent record of playing English & British players.

In fact, last season 17 of the 37 players who featured in our first team matches were English...

THFC6061, there was an article that showed that Spurs had the highest amount of players on their books that had an international cap, with 21 nationalties represented (22 at the time, but Keane has since left).

Interesting that despite this they still managed to field 17 English players last season.

I suspect half of those were in the cups, and of the 17, more than half made less than three appearances.
