That was from an owner that didn't really have a cohesive plan for where the club wanted to be the following week let alone in 5 years time!Airman Brown said:
Bowyer in 2020. He rejected it and he said the length of it wasn’t meaningful.Floebot said:
can you remind us what that wasAirman Brown said:This is good news and I am in no way suggesting otherwise. I do recall the last five-year contract offer made to a Charlton manager and what he said about that, though, so I wouldn’t take the term itself too literally.
It feels much different now, to me anyway.3 -
That wasn’t his point, though. It was that five year deals do not offer five years security of tenure, which has come up previously with manager pay-offs (of which we have had many).carly burn said:

It feels much different now, to me anyway.Anyway, I’m not saying this a bad thing. I’m simply saying it’s not necessarily what it is presented as. It’s a good sign that things are in the right place; it doesn’t mean either side will stick to it in practice.
Not sure who the last “permanent” Charlton manager to see out a contract was? Even Curbs always negotiated a renewal (or severance) before it expired.2 -
If he hasn't then he needs to get himself a new agent.Pelling1993 said:I wonder if Jones potentially used the Cardiff noise to get a bit of extra dosh from the new contract. Fair play to him if so.1 -
Best news since winning promotion - well deserved and let’s hope the ownership now support him with some great new signings0

Isn't the 5 years more to protect the club in terms of compensation should someone want to poach Jones?Airman Brown said:

Provides security for both parties, if we do very well this year and another champ club comes sniffing they would have to pay what I guess would be a huge amount in comp.2
-
But I thought he was a lifelong Cardiff fan and is desperate to go back and live in that shithole?2

Reports coming in of some very worried sheep. They'll have to take it out on someone...JaShea99 said:But I thought he was a lifelong Cardiff fan and is desperate to go back and live in that shithole?2 -

Didn't Parker sign a new 4-year deal in the summer immediately before Chelski came calling?Giving Jones a 5 year (2 year extension) contract does two things - firstly it is a statement by the club (and Nathan) of their current level of commitment and ambition, and secondly it is a reward for Nathan as I'm sure the new contract is at enhanced terms!3

Great stuff
I'm not for one second saying he can emulate Curbs, but I think he's certainly the person we should be building around for long term success. I'm excited and hopefully they will back him in the summer.1 -
Bit optimistic for us to go up automatically and win the FACupshine166 said:
He'll be negotiating again in 12 months once we've won at Wembley again.ShootersHillGuru said:Five years is an awful long time in football. Having said that it shows that the owners and Jones see the project clearly as one that’s going to progress year on year.1 -
A real statement of intent. Will be useful when trying to attract players of a better quality to the club imo.3
-
I would advise him to get a drum locally so he doesn’t have to kip at the training ground.0

Only 5 years?3

Would be interesting to see a league table month by month as someone said hard to believe we went up !Those at Crawley home take a bow !2
-
Good start to the summer imo.
Sends a message that the club is stable - both to the fans and wider football world, and to the current squad and potential new arrivals.

Yep after leaving that game with the few there that night -it was all doom and gloom just thought the end of another shit season and we were in December!Valleysarr said:Would be interesting to see a league table month by month as someone said hard to believe we went up !Those at Crawley home take a bow !
Amazing the turnaround since that night
Really feel we are in a good place as a club and so different to 2019 when we we did not max out under the opportunity then
Now
Onwards and Upwards3 -
News that has brought joy to my heart. Thank you Nathan!1

As a lifelong fan (like your good self) I was in the same boat, and I learned to put faith in our owners and my full confidence in their stewardship, which resulted in me buying mattress protectors!swordfish said:Should've been 7 years. No commitment from Jones and the owners 😉
As someone who was concerned he might be tempted by Cardiff, I've changed the bedsheets now and I'm feeling much reassured. What a great sign this sends, making us all the more attractive to potential recruits, who now know the club have confidence their man can deliver, if they ever doubted it before.
A 5 year deal, is a statement to the footballing industry. Charlton are now a club with stability, and money, with forward planning all gearing up to an upward trajectory.

I agree with that.bobmunro said:AberystwythAddick said:Provides security for both parties, if we do very well this year and another champ club comes sniffing they would have to pay what I guess would be a huge amount in comp.Every contract has a termination clause! His subsequent dispute with the club was around whether Chelsea met the threshold.1 -
This screams to me, that Jones is EXTREMELY happy with the new Reebok range of shirts coming out23

Yes, but I did call it nonsense as I'm not as uncouth as some 😉bobmunro said:eastterrace6168 said:
