On a different note. Its been disgraceful how all governments and the MOD have treated the atomic test veterans. They will eventually all be dead soon and they wont have to worry about it.
I was a dockyard apprentice/fitter and worked on nuclear subs, all my records have mysteriously disappeared from that period of time 76-83

One of my favourite films and books. Nevil Shutes On the Beach. Set in Australia post nuclear war. They all die in the end.I believe the threat of nuclear war was greater than now growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. It never bothered me as a kid and not now as I approach retirement. I now I believe it’s only a matter of time before some freak decides to chance his arm.If we were targeted it would likely kill us all very quickly hopefully, except for the great and the stupid. They will shuffle out of their shelters and die a few months later. The living will envy the dead, as someone once said.1

I hope the MOD finally get round to compensating others. After all they are considering reparation money for something that happened thousands of years ago, i am sure they can cough up money for veterans.

Many and i agree short cut the provision of PPE and approved processes, but that doesn't stop the employer being accountable for their actions.
We recently had a case here where a guy lost 50% of his compensation where something hit him on his head falling from a gantry. He wasn't wearing a hard hat in a mandatory hard hat area., lucky to be alive, as it glanced from his head.1 -

If a person or country is in a suicidal frame of mind, or feels they have their back against the wall, then they will use nuclear weapons if they have them.
Mutually assured destruction doesn’t matter in that instance.
I don’t believe there is such a thing as a battlefield or tactical nuclear weapon, maybe somebody can point to the situation where they certainly exist.0 -

According to the internet the UK has them.
What I read said this:
‘Trident is designed to be a deterrent weapon of last resort. The UK maintains a single submarine at sea at all times, which carries about 40 warheads, each with the destructive power of about six times the 15-kiloton (kt) Hiroshima bomb. The weapons are only to be used in the highly unlikely scenario where a surprise, all-out nuclear attack destroys the UK and its way of life. In theory, the weapons on a Trident submarine have the destructive power to destroy major cities such as Moscow or Beijing, and so act as a deterrent.’
I found this article from ‘Scientific American’
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/limited-tactical-nuclear-weapons-would-be-catastrophic/
Essentially it seems to be about degrees of destructive power.
I reads like enough to destroy the planet, up to enough to destroy the planet hundreds of times over.
One part of the argument seems to be that if people think they can use nuclear weapons in a ‘limited’ way, then there will be more temptation to use them.

He worked in the reactor compartment of the sub. When they removed the reactor it used to go away (to sellafield I think for re-processing) and it used to sit outside out rest cabin for days on a special adapted railway carrier. We used to duck round it as it was quicker to do that than go round it. The stainless steel cooling pipes used to just sit on the dockside before removal. We often queried this but they used to say its fine as it hadn't been in contact with the core...mmm.
As you know where i work, we used to have whole body monitoring on a yearly basis that measured your yearly and lifetime dose, they have stopped doing it now, as they reckon they have other means of checking your exposure based on other equipment you use when visiting certain area's. A backward step in my view.1
