England were very lucky. The defence, especially Carter are not good enough as a unit to pass it around againr any sort of press but Carter is about as weak a link in the chain as it is possible to get. Oh for Millie Bright! Surely they can put somebody better than her in the side. No touch and no pace!

Player of the match for me was Bronze. I have been a bit critical whilst accepting I would still pick her but she dragged us to victory IMO.  She is a female Stuart Pearce. I told my wife what she would do with that penalty and I was exactly right.

Sweden will still be wondering how they lost that but it does happen in football that even if you are comfortable, at 1 nil or 2 nil, there comes a point in the game where you settle for what you have and if the other team take risks at that point they can get back into it even if it seems unlikely.

Special mention to Hampton for one of her penalty saves which was incredible. Practice needed from the spot methinks!
  • Anyone notice the Charlton Ladies England flag draped over the hoarding. Anyone on here?
    Yes

    So did I.
  • Turned on for the pens 5 mins before the end first visit to watch women’s football in forever
saw two really pathetic lame attempts by a player who in fairness smashed her pen away .
then the pens love it good bad and mainly ugly , pretty pony …. Then I find out that twEarp is no longer goalie cos she was put on bench a little while back and cried off retiring, good . Her replacement done well in the shootout .
i shall return for another shootout if there is one
otherwise I might Kelly malone it up and come out of retirement at 55 to lead us to women’s World Cup glory
Thanks for that educated and well though out summing up of five minutes, well done you.

    (the penalties were terrible though)
  • Dreadful penalty shootout but it was entertaining. The England keeper flapped at everything during the game  - seems to be the weakest position in the women's game.

Absolutely, although they don’t need to be any good in penalty's shoot outs if last night was anything to go by !

I think she made some good saves as well as her performance during the shoot out. On the other side of the coin she was lucky at times that when she did not take the ball a swede did not tap it in.

Hampton apparently has an eye condition that makes it difficult for her to judge depth, which sounds weird for the England number 1.

Goal keeping always seems to be the most difficult position whether it be kids, lower league, women's or Scottish football.

  • I thought Sweden would win before KO, mainly because I thought they would exploit England down both flanks and on the counter attack with their pace.

Sweden were like a tennis player with a myriad of match points and they blew them all. They snatched defeat from the jaws of Victory.

I have criticised Bronze with her defending which have led to goals; the French game being a good example but I've always said she's a powerhouse when attacking in that wing back position.

Chole Kelly was the catalyst for the victory: The pin point cross for Lucy's headed goal was as good as you will see and her 2nd assist to the assist was excellent for the Desmond. Plus her penalty sent the keeper the wrong way.

The Penalty shootout was the sublime to the ridiculous. Russo, Kelly and Bronze were 3 great pens, whereas James, Greenwood, Mead, and Clinton's gave the keeper a chance as they telegraphs their pens.
The Swedish pens were mainly over the top, hit the post or decent saves from Hannah !
Why Blackstenius was taken off in the 117 minute was a mystery as the Champions League goal scoring winner for Arsenal would surely have scored the decisive winning penalty ?

Morgan has to take over from no pace Carter and Greenwood will revert to CB to replace the injured captain Williamson as she didn't sound confident she would be fit.

Carter has looked poor whenever I've seen her play - definitely a weak link.
  • Was watching on German TV, but odd that Bronze had to strap her own thigh up.

It didn't stop her leathering that penalty away though, showing the youngsters how it's done.
  • I just want it to get like tennis, where yes everyone knows the women would lose to the men but are happy to not bang on about it every match, and can leave those who like watching it to just enjoy it for what it is.
I really enjoyed the game last night - women's football has come on massively in the last twenty years. The shootout was a bit of a farce - Sweden undoubtedly bottled it.

    Looking forward to the Semi.

Bronze is a female version of Stuart Pearce. That is a high compliment and she deserves it. Of course she is getting older and isn't as good as she was but she still offers that grit and strength that England really needed last night. James is a very talented girl but also demonstrates a naivity in her play.

I have heard countless times that England are a passing team but I think they have to change tactics a bit. Their passing is too vulnerable to the press as it stands so maybe they need to play a few more longer balls which means they need a couple up front to battle for them. Russo and Agyemang makes sense.

Also agree that the comparisons with men's football in terms of quality is boring and those constantly making them should bore off.
  • Weird that Agyemang , as an attacking player, wasn't amongst the first 7 penalty takers.
  • She might not have fancied it. The worst person to take a penalty is somebody who doesn't fancy it. That can happen in the moment.

The quality of many of the missed penalties didn't suggest those takers were super confident or ready either...

Doesn't help that she's 5ft9 either. I think the average height for a keeper at the Euros is about 5ft8 which is not ideal for a position where typically height is the first advantage keepers have. The best keepers are typically also amongst the tallest but in the women's game you've got the same goals where 6ft6 male keepers will use every inch of their frame to tip a ball over the bar. It means that when the ball comes into the box and the keeper gets crowded like Sweden did to Hampton it's very difficult to manage, but she always got enough on the ball to deflect it away from where it was going and allow it to be cleaned up. Sweden are one of the taller teams in the tournament so I think Hampton stood up relatively well to the crosses considering, and we obviously have a defensive set up in these situations to clear the ball quickly when it doesn't travel away initially

That shootout was not a good advert for women's football
The men's game has had a 100 year head start on womens' football. It's gonna take time for it to get to the standard of the men's game.

I watch my 10 year old daughter play and some of the girls are so technical and combative they'd have run rings round boys teams in the 80s. (Boys teams have obviously improved too in this respect)

No girls played football when I grew up in 80s and 90s but loads of them are playing up and down the country and hopefully that will keep growing.

I used to think the over promotion of the women's game was woke bollocks but seeing the joy and passion of my kids, especially when we won last night made me get why it's been engineered like that and we'll see the benefits of that come through.

I reckon in 20 years if not before we'll see messi level players based on the technical ability and potential of some of the youngsters playing now.

Regardless it has such a positive impact on  girls and  young women in terms of health and self esteem and good to give them role models and aspirations beyond  the pervasive social media influencers and only fans culture that's imposed on them these days.

No idea why this perfectly reasoned statement got LOLed.
  • Chloe Kelly has the weirdest run-up for taking a penalty but absolutely leathers it and gives the keeper no chance.

It's genius, completely throws the keeper of her rhythm and makes it so hard to judge where the ball is going

But if you miss you look a right knob

Her penalty against Nigeria in 22/23 was harder than any shot in the Premier League that season and clocked in at around 70mph. She's completely confident with her placement so she just hits the ball like it owes her money
