  • Well done the Lionesses!
Our winning goal tonight won’t count in future though if some in the upper echelons of the game have their way: https://www.henrywinter.football/p/fight-the-games-bounders-not-the/
My god! Why do we put up with these egotisical, attention seeking dick-heads running our game?

This England women team reminds me of those Italian or German men's team that you think are rubbish...but end up progressing  into and through the knockout stages.

Winning is a very good skill to have.

Agree, just like the two teams you mention who won WC or Euros with pragmatism and a winning mentality.
We started off really poor against the flair of France.
Played well against the struggling Dutch and Wales were just out of their depth.
Against both Sweden and Italy, we started off so flat against fit and organised teams who punished England in transition.

The reason that both Sweden and Italy didn't beat England when they were on the ropes was because their better players weren't on the field at the business end of the match; Blackstenius, taken off 3 minutes before pens ! and Italy taking off the impressive Cantore and Bonansea who were excellent, around the 70th minute. Losing their captain Girelli was a big blow as she used all her experience and had a great Euros.

England won the last Euros not because we were the best team, but because of our game changers from the bench, in Toone, Kelly and Russo. Spain outplayed us in Q. Final and Germany lost their captain Popp in the final warm up.

Kelly again and young Agyemang and Beever-Jones giving fresh impetus to the team with Michelle being the new kid on the block with her goals.

Why Sarina waited until the 85th minute to put on Michelle Agyemang and Beever-Jones only she knows when it cried out for their introduction 10 minutes earlier.

England women win football matches; that's a great habit to have

James should've walloped that. Watching on my tod in a pub in Manchester, pretty good atmosphere
    You're a one-man party, @McBobbin!
I don't even remember getting back to the hotel. Got chatting to someone in the pub and it turned into a full on good old fashioned British session. Only reason I'm in Manchester is to visit one of our offices and make a good impression and think I'm still steaming 🤣🤣🤣🤣
  • I completely missed the last part of the game. Glad they won. Bank holiday still on.
  • Going 2-1 down seemed to cure the Italians cramp issues in an instant.

That was the highlight of the evening for me, watching them go down like they had been shot and time wasting and then sobbing their eyes out at the end. Karma was served

The women’s game doesn’t seem to have improved at the top level.
The lesser teams from 4 years ago do seem to have improved though Either way we support the lady lions.
    It is a poor tournament.
still makes me laugh when the US legend Rapenhoe or whatever her name was asked for equal pay!!
The women’s game would cease to exist if that was the case!
The US women’s team is far more successful than the US men’s team, and pulls in more money, so why shouldn’t they get at least the same pay and conditions as the men for representing their country?

Cracking way to support your conjecture there. Just casually misspell a name instead of taking 5 seconds to Google it - because nothing screams 'well founded argument' like not bothering to even get the basic facts straight.

An extra 30 seconds will have led you to the salient data point - which is that, at the time Rapinoe made the argument, the US women's team was far more popular, and generated far more revenue than their male counterparts.

The women’s game doesn’t seem to have improved at the top level………..a bit like the lower leagues of the men’s game despite the ridiculous amounts of money the men get paid 😜

Interesting way to misspell it too

    Yeah, odd that. 🙄
  • Comparing the men’s and women’s game must be the dullest conversation known to humans. Fucking tiresome, and both sides are guilty of it.

I mean they pay people to play basketball for gawd sake.

Strange how popular baseball is compared to rounders...

The women's team are definitely more successful but they don't earn more. The prize money for the men's world cup is four times what the women get.

The US men's team got $13m in Qatar, this was more than the women's team earned ($6.5m) from winning the 2015 and 2019 tournaments combined.

But in any case it doesn't matter because the USA actually do have an equal pay agreement anyway, so the men and women’s teams split all World Cup earnings.

Irony of this is that WNBA players are kicking up a stink about their paypackets when the league loses £40m a year.

Charlton lost £13.9m last year, would you support cutting the wages of the first team to prevent that?

Again, it’s more complicated than that. The owners have been crowing about new valuations of their “franchises” whilst claiming the league loses money. Once you dig a little further, past the creative accounting, the players have a very good argument that the money isn’t being spent in the right places.

Akin to Amazon managing their profits down to zero and claiming they’re not profitable and can’t possibly pay taxes. But then spinning profits on demand when they want to emphasise shareholder value. Funny that.

The USA Women football have always been the outlier when it comes to money and how it's shared out  because of their greater success against their male counterparts. Equal pay now apparently.

Alex Morgan the recently retired USA female international WC footballer earned more money from modelling outside football and maybe the biggest earner overall, male or female from the states domestic footballers other than the stars from abroad like Beckham etc in men's football.

In America from kindergarten girls play football and have done for 50 years and that's why they were so successful.

That argument doesn't really hold much water. Most 'star' sportsmen and women earn far more from endorsements, image rights etc.

  • Back to the Euros.

Skilful Spain against whoever is fit or not suspended for Germany. Spain are still the team to beat and despite the heroics of Germany against France with only having 10 players for 117 minutes if Spain hit top gear and move the ball in their normal crisp way then they should meet England in the final.
Bonmati was never going to be at 100% for these Euros after having viral Meningitis just 23 days ago but her skill is never far away as the back flick assist in the 2-0 win against the hosts Switzerland showed in the Q.final.

Never write off the Germans ?
  • Spain are still odds-on favourites despite the fact we're in the final and they aren't yet, tells you a lot about how good they've looked.
