The really weird thing was, when I pulled him into an office a couple of days later to inform him of his suspension, he said he tried to keep it secret as she is married etc, as though that justified everything.

I'd have thought that it could affect any team at work. 

I mean, once she came under his orbit, not only would it cause a nasty atmosphere, but it would disrupt fellow workers from their careers taking off - just when they are looking for a boost.  The countdown to their relationship began a long time ago, the chances of success about the same as an Elon Musk test flight.
