My Beautiful Boy, Gilbert RIP.

RIP Gilbert, Oct 2010-July 2025. 14 years old.

My beautiful boy went to sleep late Wednesday afternoon 16/07/25. His Kidneys had failed and though it was the right decision to end any suffering, I just wanted to keep him forever.

He was a rescue and 4 years old when I got him, he’d had two previous owners and he’d been treated badly. It took a long time to win him over and bond but thankfully we did and I’m so grateful for the time we had together.

He would have been about 8 years old in the pics and in the last few months, he was a shadow of his vibrant, lively and lovely self, that in itself was so pitiful to witness.

I’m totally heartbroken.

14 doggy years is a decent age, still very sad when a good friend dies ..

Well done to you for giving him the loving home he deserved. Very sorry for your loss.
Our dog is 8 now and showing a lot of signs of slowing down, currently hobbling round the house after a leg X-ray (the vets wrench them about quite a lot), very unhappy.
I dread the day when his time comes, and feel every sympathy for you after saying goodbye to Gilbert.

No amount of years with a dog is ever enough when you spend your life with them.
Feel for your loss. It's crushing even when you know it's coming.
Don't be alone for too long.

So sorry for your loss. Having recently experienced this with my own best mate, the hole it leaves inside you can't possibly be overstated.

It's a small comfort, but you gave him an amazing life after a horrible start, hopefully you can take a little solace in that

    Thanks everyone.

I feel I should be celebrating the wonderful life we had together but right now that’s impossible as everything feels so cold and empty.

I went through the same thing with my previous dog, Georgie but it never gets any easier, does it!

RIP Gilbert, What a wonderful looking boy, so sorry for your loss, remember the life you have given him. My cat Marley is getting on for 16,got him from
a rescue centre after not the best start in life, love him loads, dreading the day it comes, but we know he has had the best possible life with us,very spoilt
but that's why we have them.

I am sure you did the same for Gilbert.

Take care and sending you much love.

My condolences....it's so painful when we lose our animal companions whom have been with us through the ups and downs of life. Please just try and think of the great life that you gave him; many others are not so fortunate. All the best.

My thoughts are with you.Such a hard emotional time .My daughter ( now a solicitor) always wanted to be a vet for many of her younger yrs but decided she couldn’t because she felt she could never close an animals life. It’s just so sad
  • So sorry to hear your sad news.
Have had the great pleasure of having dogs all my life and it is absolutely heartbreaking when you loose one.
As others have said take great pride that you have provided his best life.

Sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye to a loved pet, I think especially so in the case of dogs, is one of the hardest things we can go through. The sad toll we must pay in return for the years of joy they give us.

You did a wonderful thing to rescue him and give him a new start in life in a loving home. Rescue dogs can be more work at the beginning but go onto to make the most amazing companions.
