Terrible terrible news. RIP the Tank. I was gutted Curbs didnt (apparently) want to keep him and instead wanted Gary Rowett.

I wasnt there but as I recall late in his last game for us at Old Trafford he was about to score and equaliser. Then Kevin Lisbie got in the way…

Great player in a golden era for us, absolute class act, far too young to be taken

Very sad news. One of my all time favourites despite his short stay. He had everything as a CB.

I think he would get into quite a few (not just CAFC or Porto) all time World best XIs.

Really sad news and like others have said he was a leader and no one beat him. Saw his debut at Stamford Bridge and his last game at Old Trafford

Wow. Incredibly sad. What brilliant memories of seeing someone of his pedigree at the Valley. Way too young
  • Awful news. He was easily the best centre back that I have seen in a Charlton shirt.

With the possible exception of Simonsen, I can't think of a player who has made such an impact at and for Charlton in such a short time? His arrival had the football world blinking in disbelief at little old Charlton, albeit for just a short while. The story of the journey from the airport is stuff of legend. He gave his all for the club and will always be loved by those of us that saw him.

    We love you Tank.

    RIP. 😢

    Absolutely terrible news.
What a great defender he was for us 20 years ago, albeit over a few months.
I trust we will be singing his song on Saturday in honour of the great man.
    R.i.P. Jorge.

How terribly sad, the best centre half I’ve ever seen in a Charlton shirt.

    RIP.

A joy to watch the way he took command of the team.

I was there, my Dad still recounts that moment regularly, it would've been the cherry on top of his faultless spell with us.
Costa's time with Charlton is the epitome of quality over quantity.
His 26 appearances are remembered far more fondly and vividly than the countless mercenaries who've worn the shirt since.
    Truly a class act.

Whenever I recount my favourite CAFC players that I have seen play live to date, there is just the one position and one player who always immediately comes to my mind and lips, a CB named Jorge Costa. Regardless of who the opponents were my stand out memory of watching the games Jorge played in was seeing him use every old trick in the book to man mark them out of the game while rattling the opposition forwards relentlessly.

He was a tank, a warrior, a player who you would have thought was born, raised and played for Charlton for all his life, not merely on loan.

I am gutted he is gone, had quietly hoped he would come back to manage one day more probably out of the romance of it than natural fit, but that is no longer to be…

Rest in Peace, Jorge (27) and thank you for the finest of football memories x
